COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

On tap at Monk’s. Deep golden hay color with thin white head. Aroma of straw and tropical fruits. Tastes like pineapple and sweet malts. Super balanced and light for a 2xIPA

Pours a beautiful crystal clear golden orange with a nice big off-white head. It sort of sparkles in the glass. Aroma is pine/citrus hops and just the perfect amount of malt. Taste is absolutely incredible. Most IPAs and DIPAs don’t quite get that balance right. Most have that little bit of astringent bitterness that makes you pucker a little. Pliny nails it. This is not a "hop bomb". It is an exquisitely crafted, perfectly balanced DIPA. Pliny compels you to keep drinking it. The mouthfeel is medium, not too thin, not too thick. The finish is outstanding. It is INSANELY, deceivingly drinkable. A lot of people claim that this beer is overhyped, but to me, this is the gold standard by which all DIPAs should be measured. I’ve had it twice, and both times I finished the beer in about 10 minutes. It literally made my mouth water and I couldn’t stop myself from taking sip after sip.

On tap at Parry's. A very special beer, indeed! Pours dark gold with a creamy white head. Good lacing. Smells of pine resin and citrus and hops. Great mouthfeel and carbonation. Tastes big a hoppy. In fact the hops are so complex that one can taste all three varieties if you try. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap @ Russian River. Golden color, white head. Big hop-aroma coming from the glass. Citrus, pine, some pineapple maybe. Overwhelming but not annoying. Crisp mouthfeel, medium dry, and that fruity hopflavour that makes you order another one. Second best IPA for me, i guess, behind the Heady Topper. I wonder how Pliny the younger would taste ....

Bottle. Nice caramel popcorn, toast, floral hops that is well balanced and not overwhelming. Light bitter taste with a hint of malty sweetness. Clean finish and light lingering bitterness that builds. This is a great beer consistently but is very delicate. With the privilege of drinking this beer through the years I have been able to try it as fresh at it gets at Russian River and skunked. Makes my summer better every year.

I waited a long time to try this on draft. Special road trip from San Fran on 16 Aug, 2014. Had on draft at Russian River. Toasted with my buddy AJax. Perfect aroma of floral hops, grapefruit, orange and lime pith. The flavor is just as strong and bright as the aroma.

This brew does have a subtle amount of pale malts but this is secondary to the array of hops. Grapefruit peel, light grass effects, with the floral hitting near the back side. Of course it is not just floral in the finish, lots of pine there as well to round off the myriad of hop flavors. I feel no reason to ramble and write a huge ass rating, this is wonderful and a trip into flavor town. Glad I held off from trading for a bottle and sampled it from the source.

On draught at 2014 saraveza iipa fest - pours clear golden with medium head. Nose is of pine. Hop, pine. Taste is of pure hop and sweet malt. Nice and oily hop finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

There is nothing left to be said. This is obviously one of the best beers available and is certainly the best beer I have ever had. The perfect balance of malty and hoppy.

Awesome beer and one well worth the hype surrounding it. Everything you expect out of an IPA and more, whatever you heard about it is true

Sample @ Quintessence 2014.
Wouaw Trop bon!
