COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Pours a crisp clean golden color with a three finger sticky foam that laces and sticky nicely. On the nose its focused and inviting with bright hop notes; citrus, pine, spruce and a bit of sweet pineapple and cracker malts. The palate is well balanced and focused. Nice beautiful mouthfeel from start to finish with light caramel sweetness that mixes wonderfully with the front end of the hop flavors... then turning earthy with traces of woodsy spice and resinous sap... clean on the finish !

Pour is clear dark gold. Head is two fingers and off white. Nose is beautiful with pine, floral notes and pineapple. Taste is smooth with nice hop burst but not too bitter. There is good malt character to even it out. Hop notes are sweet pine, mango and citrus rind. Mouthfeel is medium and somewhat viscous. Very good. I can see why it's top shelf. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This beer has just enough, citrus notes to blend with the bittering hops, making it a great all round beer. Easy to drink when it is hot or cold, but only for the double IPA lovers.

Pours a lovely, clear, golden ale with not much of a head but good lacing. Great, sweet aroma of mangoes and papaya. Very tropical fruit in depth with a hint of pine finish. The taste of sweet tropical fruits with peppery notes and grassy towards the end. The finish is excellent with a lingering flavor of hops that makes you want to take another sip. The balance of this beer is remarkable and the smoothness of the palate makes it extremely drinkable. It is usually far better on tap though this bottle (6 weeks old) is still pretty darn good. Would have to review it again when had on tap. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Admittedly not my favorite style. Smoother than you’d expect from such a hoppy beer.

Pours a slightly cloudy yellow, lighter in color than many other doubles. Nice white head with lasting and lacing. Citrus aroma, not overwhelming. Well balanced hop and slight malt taste that impresses but doesn’t linger. Makes you want more.

Well balanced with good citrus and floral notes. Very smooth for an 8% beer. Easy to drink, and a definite gateway beer for those new to DIPAs - Drink & Give Thanks to The Lord
