COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Pours light golden, well filtered with thin but lingering head. Hops, right off the bat. The flavor is... hops. Fresh, floral, piney. Just enough malt to let the hops shine without dominating. Perhaps overrated (could any beer really live up to this hype?), but just consistently excellent.

Bottle, pours dark gold, resinous nose with tropical fruit undertones, big hoppy body is surprisingly well balanced by smooth golden malt.

From the tap the pour is clear golden with a light head, the aroma hoppy up front citrus, the taste is a little sweet lightly hopped a little pine bitters and a clean citrus, the finish is clean and mouthfeel is thin. Great beer.

Picked up in a trade at Tree House Brewing. This is the second ’unicorn’ beer i’ve tried lately that completely failed to live up to the hype. Am I spoiled by my regular access to Tree House, maybe... The aroma is almost all caramel malts with very subtle herbal and floral notes. The flavor is the same, big malt/caramel pressence with vague hints of dank hops, citrus and tropical fruit. The beer is reasonbly bitter, but lacks any sting and the finish lacks any noticeable hop flavor.

Refrigerated 0.5 L brown bottle, bottled July 23, 2015, from misterburd poured into a glass. Clear golden with medium/big white head. Aroma is very nice herbal hops, medium body, low carbonation, and good small-bubble lacing. Taste is tropical fruit, herbal hops, pine hops, and bitter finish. Good beer, but thought I would like it more.

Smell is fantastic. Candied oranges. Mouthfeel is soft and undercarbonated. Flavor is bitter coming in and going down. Slightly boozy. More burnt orange on the taste. Also peaches. I agree with another reviewer that it reminds me of Maine Beer Lunch. I actually prefer Lunch.

Nice hop and citrus scents, very light in color. Nice hop flavor, maybe a bit subtle. Kind of reminds me of Maine Beer Lunch

On tap at Monk's Cafe in Philly. Finally! Pours gold with a nice size white head. The aroma is grapefruit, lemon and pine. Flavor is a wonderful hop blend, with lasting bitterness in the finish. This beer is wonderful and lives up to the hype. 8.50 ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
