COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

My first Russian River beer! Pours a classic sunset orange color with a two finger off white head that dissipates slowly and leaves great lacing. Great carbonation coming off the glass. Pungent, dank hops as soon as the bottle is opened. Get grapefruit, mango, peach, and lots of tropical fruit like a papaya, guava, or pineapple. Slight sweet bready malt in the background. Taste is insane. Starts with a ton of sweet, fruity flavors from the hops: peach, mango, grapefruit, some pine. Then get some bread from the malt, as well as some carmel sweetness that balances it slightly. The finish makes this beer. Lots of resinous tropical fruits like the papaya or guava mentioned earlier, as well as more grapefruit, pineapple, mango, pine. Very dry and bitter finish that lasts on the palate. Some alcohol but goes well with the flavors. Tastes very much like a fruit salad in my opinion. The carmel, bready malt does last through the finish to try to balance the enormous amounts of hops. Pretty full body with a creamy and sticky mouthfeel with nice refreshing carbonation. Lives up to the hype in my opinion. A hophead’s dream beer and one of the most flavorful double ipas I’ve had in recent memory.

Draft at Stone Liberty Station. Pours clear bright gold with a bubbly white head. Tastes like strong sweet orange citrus, caramel, sweet grapefruit, and very light pine and very light hop bitterness. Light/medium body and low carbonation. Smells like sweet citrus candy, pine hops, and caramel.

Bottle pour into tulip glass. Bottle dated 10/28/14. Head is made of small white bubbles, aroma is extremely hoppy with hint of citrus. Taste is quite smooth. Tastes exactly how an IPA should: crisp and fresh with lingering hoppy flavor. I was afraid that I may have kept this one in the fridge a little too long, but found no heavy signs of degradation. Top notch IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

GABF week, 2014; at Falling Rock. I was excited to finally try this beer; and on tap at that. Bitter hop aroma and flavor. Intense hops, giving some hop burn. Citrus and pine qualities, but also sweet malt making it heavier on the palate than the Blind Pig I had a few minutes previously. Very likely the world’s best Double IPA.

Pours a golden yellow with a white head. Aroma is piney hops. Taste is a sweet tropical fruits at first then followed by resinous hops and weak tropical fruits. This beer is unbalanced in favour of hops and that is distinctly noticeable. Great beer!

pours gold with white head. Strong, earthy hops on the nose. Complex green hop, earth, and candied citrus flavors. A big malt presence keeps the fresh hop flavors from being overwhelming. Exceptionally good.
