COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

My first Russian River beer! Pours a classic sunset orange color with a two finger off white head that dissipates slowly and leaves great lacing. Great carbonation coming off the glass. Pungent, dank hops as soon as the bottle is opened. Get grapefruit, mango, peach, and lots of tropical fruit like a papaya, guava, or pineapple. Slight sweet bready malt in the background. Taste is insane. Starts with a ton of sweet, fruity flavors from the hops: peach, mango, grapefruit, some pine. Then get some bread from the malt, as well as some carmel sweetness that balances it slightly. The finish makes this beer. Lots of resinous tropical fruits like the papaya or guava mentioned earlier, as well as more grapefruit, pineapple, mango, pine. Very dry and bitter finish that lasts on the palate. Some alcohol but goes well with the flavors. Tastes very much like a fruit salad in my opinion. The carmel, bready malt does last through the finish to try to balance the enormous amounts of hops. Pretty full body with a creamy and sticky mouthfeel with nice refreshing carbonation. Lives up to the hype in my opinion. A hophead’s dream beer and one of the most flavorful double ipas I’ve had in recent memory.

finally... bottle shared by a friend. had this one after blind pig. poured a deep dark golden colour with a white head. nose of crisp malts, caramel, slight bitter pine notes, hops, harsh, citrus, grapefruit, and dried fruit. taste is a bit harsh, sticky, and bitter. a world class west coast ipa, but i prefered the blind pig over this one

UPDATED: MAY 4, 2016 From a pint bottle. Tried to get hands on this for over a year. Pours clear golden with substantial head. Smell is fantastic with nice big piney and citrus. Drinks heavy pine with less citrus similar with finish. It is very balanced for a 8 percent beer. Very solid one, although didnt blow me away after searching for almost a year to have this one. More I drink of it more Iike it.

Big thanks to my co worker for bringing this one back from CA to IN. 13 days in the bottle when I popped the cap. Wonderful aroma. Juicy hops. Exactly what you want from a big IPA. A blend of citrus and tropical. Flavor is dense with hop deliciousness. It’s moderately bitter, touch of sweetness. Not sticky or overly so at all. I could do with more bitter, less sweet but it’s a beer I would buy all the time if I could. Love it.

Gold, clear, white fluffy head. Aroma of pine, fresh hop cones, tropical fruit. Taste- drinks easy for a 2XIPA. Very well balanced, these are the two things that I notice first. As far as flavors go, can't say it blows me away but no question it's well crafted. Like the aroma, you get the pine and light tropical fruit and something like rosemary and thyme, herbal flavors. Improves with every sip. Not the best I've had but very nice! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

W smaku ogromnie czysty cytrusowo-tropikalny profil. Goryczka średniej siły, bardzo krótka, znika przed kolejnym łykiem. Oleista faktura i potężna pijalność! Perfekcyjny balans słodów i chmielu.

Can’t believe I somehow missed rating this. Bottle 4 weeks old. Clear gold, with heavy lacing. Nose is juicy grapefruit pith, some honey when it warms, light greeness and pine. Taste is dry on firm malt backbone, with long bitter grapefruit pith finish. The archetype for a reason.

Fucking, duh. It tastes like god made this beer especially for you. You want more before you’re done drinking it. It makes you happy to be alive. Piney. Fresh. Vibrant. Balanced. So balanced. Clean. It’s everything you heard. It lives up. If you like IPA’s, this is your new girlfriend. Drink it. Before the guy sitting next to you does.

Bottle. Aroma is tropical fruits, mango, orange, citrus, pineapple, hints of pine, some herbal notes. Deep golden, clear, nice frothy white head. Medium sweetness, medium bitter, taste is grapefruit, orange, orange zest, tropical fruits, floral notes, nice bready backbone, some alcohol. Medium body, medium carbonation, long delicious finish with beautiful bitterness and some warming alcohol. Extremly well brewed DIPA with lovely integrated bitterness. Definetly up to the hype!

Simcoe to the face and a slight malt backbone come from this crystal clear pale golden brew with little white head around the edges of the glass. The flavor at first is sweet then bitter with a grassy note and creamy finish. This full bodied brew offers a good balance between malt and bitter with a nice finish of hop flavor.
