Commercial Description:
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Slightly hazy gold colour. The hop aroma is bright and clean, all citrus and florals. Fresh bread provides the backbone of the beer, with tropical fruit, citrus and floral hop notes. The bitterness is assertive - almost too resiny but nice. A bit of an envelope pusher in the way it approachs the West Coast IPA theme, this is a well-constructed beer just inside the boundaries of reason.

bottle shared by JMFG: pours a georgeous golden honey with a nice white head. aroma is the perfect hops of a mixture of citrus and earth slight grapefruit and awesome malt. flavour is a great full of hop bitterness earth and citrus twirl together to form almost perfection of the hop, the malt then comes through to give a good balance, fantaastic beer.

Amber pour with a very thin white head. Pine and citrus hops as well as a bit of honey in the aroma. Flavor is pine hops, herb, caramel, toffee. Finised very bitter, dry. Only complaint is I’d prefer a bit more carbonation...

Poured a hazy orange color with a big off white head. Aroma is incredible, fresh pine trees and grapefruit, slightly under perfect. Flavor is also very tasty, but is a little disappointing for such a great aroma. Excellent pine hop flavor but a little light on the palate and would have gave it a 10 on flavor if it had a little more bitterness

I’m comparing this to Blind Pig, well because BP was incredible. This is not quite as good but still an awesome brew. Aroma isn’t as strong and nice as I hoped for but still good. Hops and pine balanced well with notes of citrus. Appearance is a light gold copper that gets darker as it reaches the top near the thick white head. Flavor is actually on the lighter spectrum of a DIPA. Light on hops, pine and citrus. Palate is also a little weak for DIPA, good bitterness but not as strong as I like to see. Overall its a really good beer but hoping to be more impressed...as if a 4.2 isn’t good enough?

Poured orange from the bottle. Huge juicy orange and bitter hop on the nose. Taste is nice big grapefruit, more sweet ripe orange, pine, nice sweet malt character. Big and full, just what I was hoping it would be. Floral hops, sticky and delicious.
