Commercial Description:
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

On tap at hop devil grill, NYC. Cloudy orange pour, decent fluffy head and good lacing. Aroms is surprisingly malty, fruity, a bit of citrus. Well balanced, with cinnamon and lemon hints. In the mouth this has a strong bite, big early bitterness. Citrusy hops come in full force midway through, though calms down to a very mellow finish, with a very sweet, perfect caramel, and lingering grapefruit.

Draught @ O’Brien’s San Diego

The beer pours somewhat deep amber; the head is white and full in size, the texture semi-creamy with the lace a velum like sheet to conceal the glass. Nose is hop floral, sweet malt underneath, lime like crispness, fresh and a treat for the nose as well as the eyes. “Zap” the hops slam your taste buds to attention, magnificent is a word I think fits perfectly, stern acidity with a hop spicy dry aftertaste that leaves you puckering and eager for another taste. A beer certainly made for us lovers of hops and another great example of the big California Imperial IPA’s.

[1908-20081219] 500mL bottle. Spruce sap aroma with strong evergreen hops and a mild background of sweat. Clear, light orange body with medium-lasting creamy white bubbles. Juicy evergreen spruce flavour has a great bitter balance. Medium body is quite bitter. Lovely, lovely hoppy bitter brew, really drinkable.

Bottle, courtesy of and shared with Jerc and Mabel - thank you so much for sharing the much sought after gem guys! Incredible pine hop aroma - wow. Medium to dark yellow, frothy white head. Incredible taste - all pine hops, ,lovely soft body, so balanced. No alcohol noticeable. Soft tingly almost juicy hops. The most well integrated double IPA I have tried? Stunning. This and Yulesmith - you cannot get any better. I give this one the edge - for now.

Growler: Courtesy of Styles. Great aroma with lots of sweet citrus and grapefruit. Pours a transparent golden-orange with a huge white head with great retention and lacing. Lots of sweet citrus flavors up front. Finishes with a well balanced grapefruit hoppiness. One of the most well balanced IIPA’s I’ve had and definitely one of the best.

Tap at The Liar’s Club. The beer pours to a clean golden body with a thin white head and excellent lacing. The flavor is a lot like Dreadnaught and Oggi’s Hop Juice. Caramel malts topped by tons of oranges, pine, sweet hoppy juiciness. The aroma just insn’t there. The palate has some spicy kick to it that Dreadnaught doesn’t have. Perhaps it’s the yeast that they used? A good beer to be had with this one.

From bottle courtesy of dpjuart. Super hops aroma. Fresh and juicy and fruity. Apricot and grapefruit and pine. Outstanding aroma. Amber gold body with haze and a thin white lacing head. Medium-heavy watery body, not quite chewy, with medium carbonation. Awesome flavor with pine and grapefruit. Sweet pilsner malt, turbinado sugar and caramel. Finishes really bitter with juicy hops and mild sweet acidity. Dry after bitterness and watery hoppy notes. Nice beer.

Bottled on 081308 courtesy of FlacoAlto. Freash pine and citrus hit the nose and new this was good. Orange cooper body with white head. Flavor had the dry citrus vine along with enough grapefruit flavor as so not to feel too dry. Thirst quenching experience cool and crisp on the palate. Really enjoyed this one thanks Sebastian
