Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Bottle thanks to my landlord Frank! About a month after bottle date. Poured clear golden orange with thick creme head. Pleasant aroma of pine citrus. Light tingly carb med bod. Smooth balanced hop that drinks well. Hidden for the ABV.

Very fine beer. Highly hoppy, but still nicely balanced. Golden coloured, thin head which lasts a while. Just fizzy enough.

The best! What can I say about this beer that hasn’t already been said. Just give a smell if you’ve never had one, you will not be disappointed.

On tap at Russian River Brewing. Best balanced DIPA i’ve had, Surly Abrasive is up there with it. Perfect blend of hops & malt.

Poured a hazy golden color with a small, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of floral hops, sweet tangerine, and caramel malts. Taste of sweet, chewy caramel, toffee malts, grapefruit, with a very bitter hop finish, and alcohol as well.

Pours a bright orange with a medium head that dissipates. Aroma is a lot of citrus, pine and hops. Taste is crisp and refreshing with a citrus forward character with a balanced hop middle and a pine/citrus finish that lingers. Mouthfeel is smooth. Palate is supremely well balanced with the citrus/pine playing nicely off of the hops.

Definitely a great IPA! Very very similar to many others in a crowded field. For historical value and rareness on the east coast, I get it! That being said it simply is not amongst my top 7-10. There definitely are IPA’s more readily available, that imo are more enjoyable like... Another One, Head Hunter, Sculpin and Lunch to name a few. Still just about lives up to the hype, and should be sampled by all IPA lovers. Very, very good stuff. Kind of in the bells two hearted level ... imo really good, but just a tick over hyped!
