COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

On tap at russian river, pours gorgeous copper orange little soapy suds. Good lacing. Smells floral, pineapple, and piny. Tastes bomb citrusy, pineapple, resinous, beautiful light biscuity and carmel malt flavors. The hops stand out and are well complimented with the subtle malt flavors.

Tap, Monk's Kettle. Pale copper, yellow hue, crystal clear. Big resiny, columbus, centennial(?). Just enough caramel (~c40) to give substance, but still drinkable. Bit of leafy, medicinal lingers. Excellent dipa. Not what the hype makes it out to be, but a benchmark representation of style.

Just a great IPA plain and simple lives up to the hype. Its a darn shame this beer is not easier to obtain so more beer lovers of IPA’S could at least try and enjoy this beer.

bottle at home from trade with amazinwrldfood, many many thanks for this one Rob. dark yellow, clear color. medium big off-white head. very nice smell of pines and fruits, mango, oranges, light grapefruity, very light sweetness. medium to full body, rather bubbly carbonation, almost a bit too much, slick mouthfeel, taste of pines, fruity, mango, oranges, grapefruit, grass, citric, light astringent, light sweetness. light dry and light to medium piney bitter finish. nice pine notes on the aftertaste. wow, was really looking forward to this one. Drinks very good and tastes very fresh, greatly balanced brew. Definitly lives up to the hype. Bottled on 03/07/2015.

Bottle, four weeks old, muled from San Francisco (City Beer, I think) by Button the Mule, my best mate and drinking partner for the last 25 years. And it’s ridiculous that I didn’t get to share it with you, Joe. Never even got to say thanks. You’ve left us too suddenly, and too soon, and you’ll be missed like you’d never have believed. As for the beer, I think you’d have approved. It’s fresh, juicy, clean, and pithy bitter in all the right places. There’s an elegant sweetness to it. It’s a grower. It’s delicious. There’s a phrase you’d have used to describe it! Cheers Kid. I’ll see you for a pint another time.

Bottle, filled on 02/27/2015 Big thanks to Werckmeister for this. Golden body white head. Aroma is citrus, fruits and pines with some malty caramel and biscuits in the background. Taste is also fruity, citrus and also perfect complemented by the malts. Aftertaste is also perfect balanced hop bitterness with malts backbone. Great brew.

Bottle, thx Klimaet ;) Pours cristal clear golden with big frothy, slight off-white, head. Aroma is hops! Juicy ones. Tropical fruits, pineapple, some dank and malty backbone. Taste is more piny, tropical fruits, grassy, mango, peach. Malty sweetness to balance out the bitternes. Lively body and super dry and bitter finish. This one has to be drunk by the case to live up to its full potential. Very well balanced and no presence of alcohol. Did have a all fresh one, this is a avergage score.

Visual: Pours almost clear luminescent amber, very small dissipating head, a super thin layer of micro retention, zero activity. Nose: fragrant orange-citrus-grapefruit hops, with oils (lvl-7)-pungency Attack: creamy-silky mouthfeel, bursting flavourful hops, tangerine, crisp bite Mid-palate: sharp compounding bitter hops, (lvl-4)-sweetness, (MAIN) grassy, caramel malt, biscuit Finish: bitter orange peel exhale, resin, very subtle hop bitterness, lingering bitter hopped finish. Summary: So smooth. Oh so smooth. Very easy-drinking for an 8%er. Bursting tangerine hops flavour is all I can say.

For all the hype I'm sorta underwhelmed. It's a little to bitter. I had it on tap at the brewery.

Nice floral fruity aroma. Hoppy but we’ll balanced. Fairly bitter through the middle and finish. Malty backbone is very present. Not the hop monster I expected. Excellent.

510 ml, bottled 02/27/15, from a trade with Werckmeister. Thanks a lot Stefan for this major want! :-)
Bright, dark yellow, moderate hazy body, with a medium, creamy, white head.
Very fresh, fruity aroma of citrus, apricot, peach, pineapple, pine, biscuit, some candy, some vanilla.
Taste is as fresh and surprisingly smooth, with citrus, grapefruit, pine, apricot, peach, pineapple, some grass, biscuit, honey, vanilla.
Medium, creamy, velvety mouthfeel, with a soft carbonation.
Finishes smooth, bitter, quite zesty, a bit grassy, with lots of smooth malts again, some comfortable alcohol warmth and long-lasting, lovely pine notes.

Wow, amazing! Not a hop-forward, bitter monster, like many other DIPAs, but the most balanced beer you could imagine, what I always prefer. Incredibly drinkable for the ABV, with the lovliest, fruity and piney hops and a wonderful, smooth malt backbone. I completely understand the hype, this is close to perfection!
