COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Very smooth, super well balanced, and incredibly fresh IPA. There's a fresh citrus taste that is not as pronounced in other IPAs. Not overly bitter or hoppy -- I.e., not an "extreme" IPA. I'd love to see a triple version of this, and now want to try the Younger. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Got in a trade with TopsecretWaffle. 510 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 5/27/2013. Pours lightly hazy golden amber color with a 2 finger dense off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, orange zest, lemon zest, floral, pineapple, honey, light caramel, bread, and floral earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of hop and malt notes; with good strength. Taste of grapefruit, orange zest, lemon zest, tangerine, floral, pineapple, grass, pine, honey, light caramel, bread, and floral earthiness. Fair amount of earthy pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, citrus zest, pineapple, honey, light caramel, floral, grass, pine, bread, and floral earthiness. Awesome balance and complexity of hop flavors with a moderate malt balance; and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy, sticky, and lightly crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent DIPA! Great hop flavor complexity and moderate malt balance; and very smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering; but certainly not near the hype it gets.

Hazy orange-gold with a moderate white head. Subtle blend of grapefruit, citrus, peach, and pale malt in the aroma. Hoppy, mild bitterness, and medium-bodied. A clean, crisp finish with little alcohol presence.

Finally got to try the legend, and boy did it live up to the hype.Amazing aroma of fresh cut grass, light hay and pine on the nose. Taste is sweet at first then builds in complexity with multiple taste layers on the back end. Awesome!

Golden pour. Huge tropical fruit and citrus aroma. Medium bodied, actually surprisingly light given the alcohol. Quite impressive. A looong lingering piney bitterness. Great depth and complexity.

Bottle from big johns market. Pours a very clear golden, light orange color with a quickly dissipating off white head. Aroma is a beautifully pungent blast of piney, citrusy, tropical fruit hops with a mild caramel malt background and a hint of alcohol. Taste is quite bitter with strong citrusy hop character and a mild fruity sweetness. Bitterness lasts long into the finish, leaving behind fruity notes. Top 50 beer for a reason. Spot on. Always a good day to be drinking a Pliny.

Bottle. Pours a clear bright gold. Medium white head with decent retention and lacing. Smells of strong pine and grapefruit, medium pineapple, subtle malt and yeast, boozey but very tangy. Taste is explosive, pine, grapefruit, pineapple, a balance of malt but hop heavy. Insanely smooth finish. High carbonation but slightly silky. Incredible.

I guess I’m officially not a big IPA guy. The citrus aroma is awesome! The pour is very cool orange w/ a thin white head that leaves some lacing. The taste is a good balance between citrus & hops. The beer is quite smooth at 100 IBUs. It’s very, very good!

Lots of grapefruit, citrus and tropical fruity hops in the nose. Pours a nice light copper with a good clarity and a hefty head that leaves after a minute. The taste is a hop explosion of citrus and pine with a dry malt back bone that is not very sweet allowing the hops to assault you up front. Very smooth bitterness with a dry mouth feel. Overall this beer lives up to the hype. Taste great every time, never get tired of my pliny!
