Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Really nice DIPA. Not sure it’s clearly far and away better than all the others, but it’s right up there. I would certainly buy it often if it was readily available. At $5.99 for 16 oz, it’s a very reasonable value.

Transfer from BA review on 6-27-13- Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – Pours a clear golden color with a two finger nearly pure white head. The head has a fair level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave a very nice level of streaky lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is heavy of a citrus aroma being both sweet and hoppy at the same time. The sweet citrus is of tangerine and orange while the hoppy is of grapefruit. Mixed with these smells is a bready aroma as well as a bit of caramel and some pine hop smells. Overall the aroma is citrusy, but yet still maintains a nice balance. Taste – The taste begins with a smooth bready and sweeter taste with the sweetness being of a caramel, tropical and citrus fruit flavors of orange and tangerine. With these flavors so too comes some grapefruit hop upfront, which starts out at a moderate strength and grows stronger to the end. Along with the grapefruit increasing some pine hop flavors also come to the tongue while the caramel flavors, that were initially present begin fading. In the end with the hop increasing and the sweet decreasing a nice crisp and mainly citrusy hop flavor to be left to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thicker and creamier side with a nice smoothness throughout. The carbonation is on the slightly lower side which when combined with the creamier body of the brew and the nice balanced sweet and hoppy taste overall create a very easy drinking feel. Overall – A very tasty IPA no doubt, but not as amazing and overshadowing of other IPA of its strength and class as many make it seem, which is likely driven by limited availability/distribution. It is certainly well worth a try though if you get a chance.

Bottle in Belgrade with huge huge thanks to luttonm and travlr. Pours orange/golden clear with a white foam which leaves a fantastic lacing and draft. 3 months old bottles: nose of pine resiny, pineapple and grapefruit skin. Simply amazing. Mouth: citrus peel, orange, balanced bitterness, dry feel cleaning the mouth from bitterness. Simply great! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

510ml bottle into an IPA glass. Lovely citrus hop aroma with slight pine resiny notes and a hint of tropical fruit. Pours golden amber colored with a thick soapy white head and very little lacing. Smooth, slick mouthfeel with a good amount of malt and excellent citrus and tropical fruit flavor to start. Finishes dry with a bit of pine resiny hop flavor with just a hint of bitterness. Refreshing, flavor ipa with excellent balance and without the harsh bitter bite. Fantastic ipa!

Thank you to my friend dsandanto for getting this one for me. Pours light hazy golden/amber color with white head. Aroma is juicy fruity citrus, tropical fruit and resiny pine. Thick light syrupy mouthfeel. Flavor starts off citrus followed by pineapple and mango flavor and finishing with grapefruit peel and resiny pine bitterness. High expecttion for this brew and it delivered.

Golden with thin lacy head. Sweet tropical fruit and some piney hops in the aroma. Taste is tropical- mango, citrus, pineapple. Malty but not sweet. Bitter but not biting. Finish is warming bitter with citrus and malt linger. Thanks Dan for sharing!

An odd, French cheese stink on the nose. Very pungent. Harsh bite and flavor. No idea why it's so popular. A particularly bland hop hit of an IPA.

Classic West Coast double IPA with rocky, snow white, stable head on an orangey amber beer with vivid sparkling, clear. Very strong and inviting citrussy hops in the nose, very flowery too, grapefruit, rosewater, apple peel, white pepper, toasted bread... Vivid citrus freshness in the mouth, hint of iron, perfumey and toasty with nutty malt base, very agreeable hops, oily, very aromatic if not ethereal, resinous, spicy, peppery, bitter and extremely long and complex, but not as ’biting’ as is often the case in this style. In all, an IPA balanced to utter perfection, elegant and complex, one of the best I had so far.
