Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

510 mL bottle. Thanks Moy! The pour is a clear golden sexiness with some coppery hues. The head is nice, thick, and pure white. The lace is beautiful. The aroma is grapefruit and pine. The flavor is surprisingly not bitter at all for an IPA. The balance is amazing and the smoothness is uncanny against other IPAs. The mouth feel is great and the flavors linger just a perfect amount before a dry, only slightly hoppy aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pliny is delicious, though overrated. I would say AleSmith’s IPA or bells hopslam is just as good. Smooth as can be with fruity melon-like finish.

Why doesn't everyone make their ipas with such balanced hop/malt ratio? The hoppiness is mild, but actually ADDS body to the beer, while being a very bitter beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Rating #500: Hazy golden with little white head. Aroma is butter, tropic fruit, some resin. Taste is really everthing and nothing, boozey, sweet, a spicy pepper stuff while swallowing. Very balanced, yes, but I don’t get it fully. The finish is still full of resin bitterness that sort of clogs your throat.

(bottle) slightly opalescent deep golden colour with a frothy white head. aroma of herbal hops, brown sugar and mango purée, with some notes of vanilla, light black pepper, watermelon and red onions. flavour is mostly mango, pale malts and onions, slightly resinous, with a light touch of physalis, pears, some more sweet vanilla and a light-bitter finish. medium- to heavy-bodied with average carbonation. awesome!

Bottle, 2 months old. Herbal piny, spicy aroma. Hazy golden, offwhite lace. Great balance - orangepeel, pine, light tropical and fruity chewy malt. Relatively sweet but not cloyingly so, grassy, flowery which cuts through nicely. fullbodied, sweet. Nice fruity profile which finishes on a spice note. Dangerously drinkable.

Pours deep gold into a shaker. Bright white head with excellent retention recedes to skim surface. Pine, weed and citrus aromas. Soft with sweet caramel and weed upfront turning to hot pine before the lasting grapefruit pith finish. Nice.

Bottled on 8/16/16 ... drinking 9/11/16 My first sample .... Thanx Steve Franks. The aroma is piney & resin. A slight soft sweetness and dry finish. A chewy grassiness in the middle. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
