Commercial Description:
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

This is one of my favorite beers. It’s hoppy with a citrus finish that gives me a warm glow. I drank about 5 pints of this on tap @ O’brien’s Pub in San Diego.

I’m very partial to IPAs and on a recent visit to Santa Rosa, I downed a couple pints. Amongst the world’s best.

Amazing, hands down the best use of hops I have ever had. Strong grapefruit over bitter hop flavor. Best Double IPA out there.

This is best CONSISTENTLY AVAILABLE Double IPA in Northern California. So hoppy that you may think your beer has been laced with fresh buds.

Appearnce - Pours clear and light gold/orange with some nice lacing that sticks around for the entire ride. Smell - Piney, citrus/grapefruit, floral & hoppy. Smells like one would after frolicking in a field of hops. Taste - First taste is hoptastic... goes down smooth and gets even better once the palate adjusts to the hops; light malt sweetness starts coming through. Every sip is more enjoyable than the one before and dissipates in the mouth into a refreshing clean hop taste. Palate - Great mouthfeel on this one... Crisp and light going down with medium carbonation and effervescence. Drinkability - Zoinks scoob... this is one tasty beer. 8% you say? Blasphemy! Usually I can not drink but 2-3 IPAs since my palate gets overwhelmed andI am left with a dry hoppy taste in the back of my throut... but this one... I could drink Pliny all night. This is one of the best beers I have ever had! RRBC IMO is one of the best American brewers out there.

I can’t imagine what else one could ask for from a DIPA. I’ve served this to people who would normally recoil from a well-hopped beer, and they love it. At the same time, my seasoned beer-drinking friends also appreciate how good this beer is. If the universal appeal of this beer isn’t a testament to how good it is, then I can’t think what is. Wonderful hoppy nose, with an incredible hop flavor. There is a reason it occupies the 100th percentile in these rankings. If I had a keg of this at home, I would probably become an alcoholic.

Citrus, Hops, Hops, Hops, a fine ABV and the malt to back them up. On-tap this beer is bright, medium amber in appearance with a rocky head. The aroma of hops is noticable from across the table, Wow!! Although steeping in hop necter, the bitterness is controlled by a hearty malt backbone allowing the brilliat citrus flavors to dominate.
