Commercial Description:
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

On tap @ O’Briens San diego. This double IPA poured a deep gold with a rusty hue. Head was thin and off white. Had a big aroma of citrus fruits, floral hops and a dash of maltyness. A great one!

On draft many times at my local pub (RR): Pliny pours deep golden with slight white head that leaves lacing. Aroma is bitter grapefruit rind and mineral. Medium-body envelops. Flavor is rigid from overrripe grapefruit sweetness and grapefruit rind bite over a touch of honey. Touch of apricot leads an astringent finish compelling drinker to take another sip!

Aroma is very fruity, grainy, hoppy. Sweet malt scent comes out as well, with little bits of hay. It pours with a very clear amber hue under a frothy white head, that stays for quite some time, but then diminishes into nothingness. The flavor is initially sweet and then goes into a medium-heavy bitter finish. Medium mouth feel with light carbonation. Great lacing!

Finally I got to drink this...and it was worth the wait. WOW. Gold pour, nice white head. Nose is just pure hop heaven. Citrus hops, like a ripe pink grapefruit hits your nose and some nice pine aromas are there too. Flavor is just so damn juicy and good. Citrus hops bite you, mellow malt caresses you. This is one fine beer. MORE PLEASE!

Gold in color pouring resinous with low carbonation and a small head. Quite dank and resinous in aroma with peach, apricot, orange, passion fruit and a little green onion. Lighter in body than expected. Bright, clean hop flavor mostly of tropical fruit. Moderate bitterness. Good stuff and very drinkable.

On tap at the Rock. Translucent gold pour....fluffy white head. Big hop nose, evergreen, citrusy. Flavor is top notch. Uber-hoppy flavors, pine, sticky lingering sweetness too. One of my favorites. I would’ve swore I rated this before. I’m drinking more of this tonight!
