ClarkVV (3547), Allston, Massachusetts, USA Jan 18, 2007 Updated: Mar 5, 2007 I guess it’s about time I rate this one, I’ve had it on the East Coast, on the West Coast and in between. Recently just had about 8 or 9 tulips between Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Hop Devil on the weekend of the January 12th 2007 Always a perfect appearance. Bright and perfeclty-conditioned, with a brassy-gold body with just a tint of deeper copper. White head is painted atop the body, providing moderate lacing. Keeping with my off-kilter RR reviews (except Damnation and Salvation), I’ll just give my thoughts on this one in no particular order, since already so much has been studied and said about this one. First off, not nearly as good as P the Younger ;) More apparent, bare bitterness and not as complex a hop aroma. Pine and citrus dominate the hop schedule, and while there is some excitement added by wintergreen and juicy floral hop notes, it remains pretty citric in the end. Clean, bare, base malt with only a pinch of medium-dry caramel is there in support, but allows the hops to fully glow. High strength of aroma, perpetually sniffable. Clean, flawlessly executed and dry without going overboard on the dryness. Hop juices, oils and acids all collect on the tongue as significantly more complexity arises out of the flavor than I would predict from the aroma. Nectarines, peaches, mangoes and white grapefruit, with a lime-like bitterness all combine for an intense flavor. High dextrines soften and control the bitterness, for the most part, and allow the acids to more gently cleanse the palate on the end. Malt dosent get in the way, that’s for sure, but it provides strong texture as it should, in a DIPA. A light hint of yeast (b vitamins) is apparent on the end. Hop acids definitely win out in the end, and begin to fatigue the palate over time. The grapefruit and lightly hard pine resin get a bit monotonous as well. But the relative dryness and perfect texture (extremely tight, engaging carbonation) keep it solidly drinkable for its strength.
mpersinger (31), , California, USA Oct 11, 2008 On draft many times at my local pub (RR): Pliny pours deep golden with slight white head that leaves lacing. Aroma is bitter grapefruit rind and mineral. Medium-body envelops. Flavor is rigid from overrripe grapefruit sweetness and grapefruit rind bite over a touch of honey. Touch of apricot leads an astringent finish compelling drinker to take another sip! m4rest88 (79), Beverly Hills, California, USA Oct 11, 2008 Aroma is very fruity, grainy, hoppy. Sweet malt scent comes out as well, with little bits of hay.
It pours with a very clear amber hue under a frothy white head, that stays for quite some time, but then diminishes into nothingness.
The flavor is initially sweet and then goes into a medium-heavy bitter finish.
Medium mouth feel with light carbonation.
Great lacing! daknole (856), Plantation, Florida, USA Oct 10, 2008 Finally I got to drink this...and it was worth the wait. WOW. Gold pour, nice white head. Nose is just pure hop heaven. Citrus hops, like a ripe pink grapefruit hits your nose and some nice pine aromas are there too. Flavor is just so damn juicy and good. Citrus hops bite you, mellow malt caresses you. This is one fine beer. MORE PLEASE! biz82 (1325), austin, Texas, USA Oct 9, 2008 Gold in color pouring resinous with low carbonation and a small head. Quite dank and resinous in aroma with peach, apricot, orange, passion fruit and a little green onion. Lighter in body than expected. Bright, clean hop flavor mostly of tropical fruit. Moderate bitterness. Good stuff and very drinkable. Brock_Landers (723), Panama City, Florida, USA Oct 9, 2008 On tap at the Rock. Translucent gold pour....fluffy white head. Big hop nose, evergreen, citrusy. Flavor is top notch. Uber-hoppy flavors, pine, sticky lingering sweetness too. One of my favorites. I would’ve swore I rated this before. I’m drinking more of this tonight!
