Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

From a bottle, poured a clear amber with just a little froth that didn’t form a head. Right from the start I knew this was going to be exceptional. One sniff of that gorgeous aroma and I was sold. And it was just as aromatic on the last sip as the first. I don’t even know how to describe it except to say it’s the best IPA I’ve ever had aroma wise. The taste was pretty awesome too but I like to have another someday just to compare. Just makes me want to have a Younger that much more!!

Thanks Rob for this very brew I’ve been waiting for so long to try!

510ml bottle. 1/25/16 bottle date (19 days old). Appearance: crystal clear golden orange, with a thick slightly off white head. Nice lacing. Aroma: Strong fresh fruity melon and citrus, with a bit of pine. Taste: Light malt sweetness with a touch of caramel, turning to a strong, juicy, grassy, resinous hop flavor. Only the lightest touch of citrus comes across. Bitterness slowly builds into strong crescendo. Mouthfeel: Light body for the style with a moderately high carbonation. Finish: Very dry with a strong grassy bitterness. Overall: Probably the easiest drinking, most refreshing IIPA you’ll find. Lighter malt base than most but still balances the strong bitterness well.

From notes (many bottles on many occasions). There’s a lot of hype. There’s a lot of bias. But I’d say that the actual beer in the bottle lives up to the hype and justifies all of the bias. It’s decidedly "old school" with a noticeable, firm bitterness and a hop schedule that’s far more pine than "fruity" or "juicy", but it’s just so well done. It’s perfectly clean and dry, which allow the hops to be showcased, and it’s still just about the archetype of what a DIPA should be.

I’d say this is a nostalgic beer for me and that’s why the rating is so high, but it’s way more about the beer. It’s got the hoppy start and a very tasty finish. You’d expect more bitterness given the happiness but it is very smooth on the back end.

poured from a bottle. Nose is potent from an arms length away with a big variety of stone fruit, citrus and grapefruit leading the aroma and flavor. Some subtler notes of juniper and pine. Wonderful beer that has the obvious credit to being on top.

It's perfect. Seriously. Perfectly hopped with the right balance of pines and citrus. Your palate dries from the bitterness and leaves a piney palate. The aroma is strong and smells of citra hops. It's not just hype. Bottle in SoCal. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

What separates this imperial IPA from all others is its cohesion and secondary attributes. In a world where most IPA’s are designed to explode your face upon first sip, the Pliny is a lesson in what a properly balanced imperial IPA should drink like. No discernible flaws. Not too much or too little of anything. Its an IPA that is shockingly smooth by any standard with a crisp, clean finish. 100 IBU beer without a trace of bitterness. Magical how well integrated this beer is.

Worth the hype. Much more subdued than the deScription implies (40% more malt and twice the hops). In the hands of an amateur that would translate to "thick, sweet sticky cat piss", but that's not what has happened here. The aroma is so pleasant- Pine, wild flowers and citrus. The flavor is big, but not malty. Light, bright and a little spicy. The finish is what gets me. Just like that, it's gone. No lingering hop resin or hairy tongue like some cheap ironically over hopped bullshit hipster IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
