Commercial Description:
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Tasted at Stone Brewing Company World Bistro. Pours orange amber with little head. Aroma is scrumptious fruity pine hops. One of the most delicious hoppy creations I’ve ever tasted. This might be my all-time favorite IIPA. A perfectly concocted mouth experience from sip to swallow to finale with a nicely bitter finish. I want more!

bought this bottle at the brewery a month ago. it says all over the bottle to drink soon so the hops stay fresh... after a month it still tastes just as good as it did at the brewery. great citrus flavor, can’t taste much alcohol. clean taste and aftertaste, a model of what a west coast ipa should be.

Thanks to Kaiser81 on BA for this bottle. Pours a golden color with a white head. The predominant aroma is grapefruit. There is a ton of hop flavor in this beer with grapefruit and citrus as well as maybe some earthiness. The mouthfeel is a little thinner than I expected but that doesn’t detract from the overall experience. Very drinkable beer with a complex hop flavor profile, but the beer is still very well balanced. I can see why this beer is rated as highly as it is.

Wow! Not my usual style, but very nice. High quality hops on the nose. Forest, citrus fruits and a wisp of smoke and hearth. Surprisingly smooth on the palate with burst of complex flavors. Long finish. Very impressive.

three day old growler provided by my commis austin. 11/27/2009. pours a rich golden color with a substantial off white head. a blast of floral hops hits the nose first.... followed by grapefruit, rosemary, resinous pine needles, mild pale malt richness and earthy spice. the flavor mirrors the aroma... incredibly fresh, dry and hoppy yet so well balanced somehow. it is medium bodied but rather thin considering the abv% and how much flavor is packed in here. so quaffable and refreshing! 9/3/8/5/17/4.2

Well crafted and ridiculously drinkable for its strength. Pale Amber, nice head. Aromas of grapfruit and tobacco leaves.

Bottle from Cavie. Pours a sickly yellow with just a little bit of floaters. Huge pine hop aroma. The aroma writes a check the the taste can’t cash, but it’s still pretty good. Pine, hops, caramel, and a little citrus. Great mouthfeel with a warm alcohol finish.
