COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncleís legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

An average looking beer, withstanding taste, aroma, texture to satisfy the palate. I love it. And I want more. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

What a stroke of luck to get some Pliny, without being a trader. Iíve heard about it from a good friend (who never brought any back) and Ron has heard about it too. He is a good friend that DID bring some back. Big nose of tropical fruits and a bit of grapefruit. Clear medium yellow, with nice small bubble (2.5/5). Palate is most excellent. Velvelty, lots of hops body, but very balanced and perfect, does not overwhelm. Start clear, taste a bit of the fruit. Very very drinkable. IIPA number 100 by stroke of luck. Thanks again Ron!

From a trade with leftyhyzer. (Thanks!) Poured from a 2 week old bomber into a tulip. Clear gold with a nice white head. Aroma is floral hops, with a bit of citrus. The taste reverses those a bit, with the citrus (especially grapefruit) more dominant than the floral. Very light and effervescent, especially for a double. Not boozy at all. Very, very good, although I donít think it quite lives up to the reputation (but given the reputation, that may be impossible). Definitely worth having, and if you live in a place where you can get it easily, would easily be a staple in my refrigerator. But itís not worth giving a bunch away in a trade to get.

500 mL bottle. Pours pale orange with a small but persistent white head. Smells fantastic, with pineapple, resin, lemon and fresh straw. Tastes fantastic. Complex. All of the hop flavours, along with booze. Nice bitterness. Light for a double. Very drinkable. Outstanding.

On tap at the Brewpub and later a whole bottle. I had this 1st of the 15 beer sampler tray even thou they had it marked for last. I just could not wait. Pours light hazy golden/amber color with white head. Aroma is juicy fruity citrus, tropical fruit and resiny pine. Light syrupy mouthfeel. Flavor starts off citrus followed by pineapple and mango flavor and finishing with grapefruit and resiny pine bitterness. High expectation for this brew and it delivered.

Reputation for a reason, not much to say that hasn't. Opens bitter and finishes a bit more balanced. Very solid, even at 2 weeks old

Bottle from Full Throttle Bottles in 2012. Slightly cloudy, pale on pour. Modest amount of head, with small bubbles, white colored. Clear, pale gold, medium, creamy, white head. Strong floral and hops notes, with grapefruit and other citrus as well. Taste is an exemplary balance of sweetness with a long bitter finish but not overpowering. Really top notch balance. Medium body, alcohol tones, long, long finish, medium carbonation. Fantastic DIPA - the standard bearer.

Aroma: floral hops, tropical and citrus fruits. Appearance: clear, pale gold, medium, creamy, white head. Taste: light sweet. Palate: light bitters continue, grassy hops, some flowers again, getting slightly dry in the finish. Overall: fantastic IIPA, light, yet very subtle complexity in both aroma and palate. Bottle from Pizza Port Bottle Shop, Carlsbad.

500ml bottle poured in a ordinary glass. A: Pours a clear golden-orange color with a big white to beige head which dissipates leaving some lacings around S: The smell is a must: Incredibly grassy-earthy-herby-flowery hops. Never ever felt such a fresh perfume of citrus hops in a beer. The malts and yeasts foundation is also perfect. Really unique T: Well, the taste is just perfect. Perfect American double IPA. VERY refreshing considering the 8% ABV. Amazing bitterness, balanced. Really impressive... M: Full body. Good carbonation. Hoppy bitterness as aftertaste O: Extremely drinkable and refreshing beer. Very bitter but, at the same time, smooth and pleasant. A perfect beer [ BA Review @ 12/15/2010 ]
