3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Probably not the best porter i have had, but a Vinnie Porter nonetheless that was pretty good by all standards. A good black appearance to begin with that shed hints of ruby red when put up to the light. The head was absolutely not apparent which left only the porter and I! The aroma eminated hints of coffee, espresso, perhaps something chocolate, and was mainly roasty/smokyness with hints of malt. The taste is much of the same. Good smokey coffee taste with thin chocolate undertones. I found it to be fairly thin however...the smokey flavor somewhat overwhelmes what other things are going on here and tend to drown the other subtleties out, and all i taste is a heavy smokeyness and a thinness...which is basically the best i can put it. Still, a nice food beer. Ends very dry and stout like with a good malty smokey base, but that thinness...ugh...but i still like! =)

On tap at the brewpub. Dark brown in color with a tan head. Aroma of cocoa, roasted malt, and coffee. Nice flavor with a blend of the same above mentioned components. A good amount of earthy bitterness in the finish. Very good for the style.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
So letís try and fix the deleted rating thing. My original rating I think was around a 3.9, and from the batch brewed in (I think) December 2008. This rating is from the newest batch late March 2009. Clear very deep ruby brown with a one finger tan head, creamy but fading to a thick ring and film before long. Aroma of milk chocolate, roasted malts, and a tinge more black patent than I like. The previous batch had some nice pine hops behind, but am having trouble finding them here. The flavor does have a little more pine hops, but not as much as the last batch, which is one of the reasons it was so good. I think the last batch was slightly more 3F Alpha Klaus-ish, but not near that hoppy. There is some chocolate again (I remember a little bit of Whoppers in the last batch that is absent as well). Dry finish with again, a little more burnt black patent than Iíd wanted. Bitterness was at a 3. Light to moderate carbonatiom with a medium-light body. It seems that this batch is missing that hoppy Russian River trademark (as well as another few things), which just puts this as a little above average for me. This latest batch the rating is probably @ a 3.3, so Iím attempting an average.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Tap at the brewpub: Deep brown/ruby hue with a dense light tan head. Chocolaty aroma- mild crystal malt back giving it a nice sweetness along with gritty roast. Creamy dense carbonation. Mildly sweet flavor of dark cocoa and nutty suggestions. Clean with a soft malt presence despite itís robustness. An easy drinker.
