Six malts and four hops go into this tasty dark ale. Hints of toffee, caramel, and chocolate are evident from aroma to finish in this approachable robust porter. 1.059 O.G / 40 BUs

On tap at the brewery. Pours deep dark chocolate brown. Classic (but well done- clean) porter aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, and a bit of caramel. Perfectly emanating roasted coffee and dark chocolate flavor. Minimal hop presence that provides enough backbone. Just a great porter.

Draught @ the brewpub, Santa Rosa. Rated on 20.10.2012.
Pours a black colour with a creamy off-white head. Aroma of rich roasted malts, tobacco and ash. Flavour is really rich with roasted malts, tobacco, grassy bitterness, dark chocolate and mellow caramel notes. Rich mouthfeel with a malty, slightly dry finish. Great.

Served in a wine bowl, very dark brown, carmel head wafting off roasty, slightly worty aromas. This is texturally interesting -- very light and soft on the tongue like the lightest whipped cream you’ve ever had. Nothing like Pliny The Elder. Substantially roasty, tannic, hoppy finish. Complex and substantial this is very good, but nothing like Pliny The Elder.

Strong chocolate notes behind the toasty malt, well fermented and dry. Arrived with hardly any head, but well carbonated. A fine beer, but not the best thing Vinny has made.

Cask at Elysian’s SBW Firkin-Firkin throwdown (vs. Snoqualmie Falls Steamtrain). Pours dark brown with a decent frothy tan head. Interesting and complex smell/taste- chocolate, orange, floral notes in addition to the roasty malts. Nice and smooth with a floral/roasty finish. I really liked this- easy call for me over the Steamtrain.

On tap at Russian River 4th Street Porter at City Beer. Great roasty aroma with coffee and chocolate, mild molasses. Light bitter hop smell - neutral. Mainly just a warm roasty smell. Dark dark brown clear with a little black, thin off-white lacing head. Medium bodied with medium-high carbonation. Starts with coffee and chocolate, roasted barley and nice grain notes. Molasses and some brown sugar. Mild hop finish with nutty coffee and bittersweet chocolate. After is nutty and sweet with light tang.

On draft at Russian River Brewing (Santa Rosa, CA): Pours out a transparent medium brown/garnet red, topped off with an off-white fluffy head. Nose of dark cocoa bits, pine hops, roasted bready malts, and lightly toasted grain. Moderate carbonation. Medium-bodied. Rich flavors of dark toffee, ripe fruit notes, and creamed coffee. Cream and light bitter notes share the stage for a smooth finish. Drinkability: A classic porter that’s extremely easy to drink. Pairing: Smoked ham, BBQ prime rib. Rebuy: Yes. #354 on 31032010, DG.
