COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Who’s afraid of the "big bad BRETT?" We’ll tell you who: winemakers! Because of our close proximity to several hundred wineries, we often get winemakers visiting our brewery. (After all, it takes a lot of great beer to make great wine!) Because we use 100% Brettanomyces yeast to ferment Sanctification, most winemakers will only smell the glass, and only a very few will venture to taste the beer. They think the Brettanomyces will attach to their clothing and end up in their winery. A simple solution was offered: keep a smudge pot burning at the door of our brewery so they can burn their clothes when exiting, but even that was not enough. After giving it more thought, we concluded that winemakers think Brettanomyces might scar their taste buds and possible even permeate their skin? Either way, Sanctification is one of the most unique beers you will ever taste! It was fermented with 100% Brettanomyces, rather than the traditional Saccharomyces.

Cloudy orange-gold with good, creamy white head / Perfumey, sweet, complex nose of orchard, citrus & tropical fruit, soap, and wonderful brett / Medium body, tart, watery, otherwise good balance and bitter finish / Somewhat weak flavors of orange, apple, pear, passion fruit, pineapple, hay, and horse blanket / I want to love this, especially after the great nose, but the body fails it in the end.

Sample at the brewpub. The beer is a slightly hazy deep yellow-gold color with a medium white head that diminishes steadily. Aroma of Brett and citrus. Medium-bodied with a moderately tart character and flavors of Brett, earthy yeast, grapefruit and pineapples. The finish is mildly sour and funky fruit with a lingering prickly tartness left behind. Very good offering all around.

UPDATED: JUN 13, 2013 Bottle from joeneugs, thanks!! Pours a hazy yellow with a nice pillowy white head and an intense carbonation (big bubbles) being showcased. Quite good looking to me. Aroma is a mix of brett and lacto with a dusty character to it, a bit musty too. Taste is bone dry with a nice barrel feel. Wood, citrus and old socks make up the flavor. Carbonation might be a little too intense but I can forgive that. A really fine drink!

valpoaj (534) - Valparaiso, Indiana, USA - JUN 1, 2013
Bottle acquired via trade - Pours a slightly hazy orange/gold - thinnest film of a head that hangs on where glass is contacted. Aroma is funk, grapes, highly vinous, slight hints of other fruit - refreshing and a bit more muted than anticipated. Flavor is very brett-forward, funky and slightly sour...mixed tropical fruit in the background, but if you’re not into funk, there’s not much else to offset this aspect. Palate is intriguing - highly effervescent and dries the palate harshly, leaving you clamoring for another sip. I can sum this one up by saying it was excellent, but in a way that I would only appreciate every so often...

UPDATED: MAY 30, 2013 Bottle at home, from Bridgetown Beer House PDX, 29/05/13. Pours a hazed light orange hamber with a mahoosive frothy white head. Nose is lemon rind, dry rot, funk, musty, aged apple skins, damp wood. Taste comprises bitter orange, lemon, brett, woody notes, sour grapes, light yeast, touch of sugar. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, sour notes in the finish. Another solid sour from RR !

12 oz bottle. Not counting a couple of collaboration beers, this is my first R. River - too bad it has to be a Brett beer. I have a very limited tolerance for Brett. With that in mind: Pours light amber, hazy, with a small head. The aroma bodes poorly: Brett/ wild ale with some vinegar. Intimidating. Given that, the taste was a bit better but still too funky. Nicely sour with a hint of old bread. Fine medium-light feel.
