COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Named after the great Hitchcock movie filmed in Santa Rosa in 1943. This Imperial Porter packs a rich chocolate and light smoked malt character with a very soft, dry finish.

On tap at the brewpub. It pours dark brown with an off white head. Nice roasted, chocolate, floral aroma with a touch of vanilla. The flavor is bitter and roasted with some floral hops, alcohol, menthol, coffee and prickly carbonation.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours with a black hued body with a lasting tan head. Aromas are roasty, toasty, nutty, walnut, macadamia, low chocolate and some raisins. Flavors are roasty, toasted, nutty, chocolate, low smoke, rounded dark fruits (dates, rich raisins), a bit burnt, bitter, well hidden alcohol, walnut with tannic skins. Full bodied yet has some higher carbonation with well hidden alcohol.

Appearance: Dark brown with reddish brown head. Aroma: Dark Chocolate and coffee. Flavor: Roasted grain, coffee with a long roasty finish. Hops appear only as a balancing factor. Palate: Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall: Well done, but nothing noteworthy.

On tap at the brewery. Aroma is dominated by dark malt - roast coffee with some light bakers dark chocolate. Some faint dark fruit esters are also present including prune and cherry. Pours dark brown with some lighter brown, almost amber highlights. Thick light tab head that steadily recedes leaving a thin film on top and along the edges. Nice thick lacing with medium legs. Flavor is also dominated by slightly sweet dark malts. Once again the coffee note dominates with some faint dark chocolate. Very faint cracker malt note. Low dark fruit esters, but they do as to the sweetness. Moderate bitterness. Medium alcohol spice in the finish. Medium low citrus hop note. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium low carbonation. Astringency is moderate and a bit strong for my preference. Alcohol warmth is moderate as well. Finish is surprisingly dry with only a light sticky sweetness. Overall a nice beer with nice roast character but the astringency is a bit high ad the alcohol note isn't super smooth. I think the problem with really big porters is that they can't hide the alcohol behind under attenuation like big stouts can. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at the brewpub. Pours dark brown with a modest tan head and a treacle aroma. There is a very dry dark molasses and chocolate flavor with a smoky finish. Sticks to the palate. Improves from tasty to magnificent as it warms.

Tap at RR. Dark brown pour with a short, stiff beige head leaving heavy lace. Nose is chocolatey. Medium-heavy, round body with moderate, fine carbonation. Lots of chocolate, but it’s not the usual, this is hand crafted, high cocoa chocolate, with hints of berries and cherries. Some vanilla and dark rum, with accompanying heat. Finish brings some roastiness comes with the dry, nutty finish. While I still don"t completely understand the style (isn’t this just a stout porter?), this is absolutely another hit from RR.

On tap at the brewery 3/11/13. The beer has aromas of rich roasted malts with very faint chocolate coming through. Didn’t pick up much coffee that some strong porters have. Smells semi-sweet with no real alcohol whiff to it for being almost 10%. Pours pitch black with a nice pillow-like tan head with good retention. Taste is pretty much the same, with a big roasted malts and somewhat creamy mouth. Light carbonation, not very sweet. The beer finishes a little dry, and chalky with a lot of roast on the aftertaste. Still surprised by the lack of alcohol heat to it. Big lacing on the glass. This is a pretty balanced beer for being so big, but I find it lacking unique qualities to make this a great one off.

Had a taster of this at the brew pub. Another solid beer from Russian River. Chocolate, coffee and malt flavors.

On tap at the brewpub. Aroma and flavor of medium roast coffee, smoked malt, and chocolate. As all RR brews, the palate is very good. Very little to complain about with this brew, but I didn't find it overwhelmingly unique either. Very good beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
