COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Is it beer, or is it wine? "Aged in French oak wine barrels for twelve months with distinct characteristics of fruit and subtle oak" sounds more like a description of wine than beer. But, of course, Temptation is indeed beer. Actually, Temptation is a Blonde Ale Fermented with a special strain of yeast, then aged in French oak chardonnay barrels. Flavors of wine and oak absorb into the brew throughout twelve months of aging. During this aging process, a secondary fermentation occurs using a yeast strain disliked by most brewers and winemakers called Brettanomyces. The "Bret" gives Temptation intriguing characteristics and a pleasant sourness. Temptation is re-fermented in the bottle to create its carbonation--a process commonly used to make fine champagne and sparkling wine. Spent yeast forms a thin layer of sediment to remain in the bottle.

GABF 2005: Clean golden hue with a big frothy head and vg lace. The aroma has some brett and yeast character along with light apple and grape, woody and buttery. Wow, a nice use of brett and barrel aging to set a soft flowery and fruity beer. As good as the flavors are, I could use a bit more bitters in the background. The feel is cider like, fruity crisp and lively, refreshing. Yet another winner from Russian River. I could use a few more of many of their beers.

GABF 05- Pours a golden color, soapy white head. Aroma is funky, fruits and spice fill the nose nicely. Flavor starts with a slightly tart fruity smoothness,, cherries lemons. Sour and dry finish. Very well made brew.

UPDATED: OCT 5, 2006 Very good sour brett nose. Clear yellow with a lasting foamy head. Taste-sour brett (low-med brett characteristics), some yeast/dough flavors. It seems to me that the brett profile could be a little more agressive. The only real thinkg I taste is mild brett. Enjoyable but not spectacular.

Another sampled ten (or more) times over at GABF. I have a bottle of this don’t I? I think I am happy now.

Gold-orange with an active white head, aroma is fruity sour, yeasty. Flavor is apple, lemony, perhaps a tinge of wood, vinous and tart, somewhat acidic but clean finish. Impressive creation.

Clear yellow color nice white head. Touch of tart aroma hints of a wine and some light fruits (grapes & pears). Highly carbonated palate some coating. Tart light fruity flavor w/ a dry finish. Pretty boring.

The chardonnay dominates the aroma, but there is some mild sourness and of course alcohol. Pale gold to yellow with a small head. STRONG white wine flavors. Grapes, pear, oak and some acidic tartness. Very interesting brew that I would love to get more of.

Enjoyed with elnadeau tonight. Kinda a geueze lite. Much of the sour notes one woudl find on a gueuze without as much funk. Head was light, color was golden yellow. A real tartness on the mouth, sour apples, tart grapes. Like matinelli’s cider without the sugar. Mouth feel is light and effervescent a bit like champagne. Tast profile finishes dry and clean with a touch of yeast funk. Quite an interesting brew.

Hazy buff color with a fat white head. Lemony horse blanket aroma with some pepper and minerals. Sweeter in flavor than the aroma would suggest. Tart and fruity with some aldehydes. Quite spicy. Satisfying body that rolls across the palate. Finishes a bit flat but still very clean and palate cleansing. Exceptional ale.

Pours cloudy orange with a thick white head. Very good head retention. Aroma had vinegar, lemon, citrus, orange, vanilla and cherry. Cherry, oak and vanilla round out the taste along with a butteriness. Palate is very creamy and has a cheese feel to it. Very good but just a knotch below the supplication in my opinion. Still one would never guess that an American Brewing Company makes this.
