COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Is it beer, or is it wine? "Aged in French oak wine barrels for twelve months with distinct characteristics of fruit and subtle oak" sounds more like a description of wine than beer. But, of course, Temptation is indeed beer. Actually, Temptation is a Blonde Ale Fermented with a special strain of yeast, then aged in French oak chardonnay barrels. Flavors of wine and oak absorb into the brew throughout twelve months of aging. During this aging process, a secondary fermentation occurs using a yeast strain disliked by most brewers and winemakers called Brettanomyces. The "Bret" gives Temptation intriguing characteristics and a pleasant sourness. Temptation is re-fermented in the bottle to create its carbonation--a process commonly used to make fine champagne and sparkling wine. Spent yeast forms a thin layer of sediment to remain in the bottle.

Had on draught at Russian River. Pours golden blonde with a small white head and very nice lacing. Aroma is strongly vinous with hints of oak, yeast, and acid. Taste is amazingly complex with strong flavors of oak, chardonnay, malts, acetic acid, and the perfect amount of sourness. An easier drinking sour than the Consecration and Supplication, but no less complex or enjoyable. Worth $25/bottle? Perhaps. Worth it on tap straight from the source, any day.

375 ml bottle courtesy of tkrjukoff. Shared at epic tasting on February 11. Pours clear golden with a small creamy white head that leaves no trace while quickly dissipating. Smell is sour and funky with lemon juice, orange zest, some sweet fruits and dusty farmyard. Taste is sour with grapes, lemon juice, orange peal, sweet fruits, hay, leather and wood. Mouthfeel is sour, slightly watery and very balanced. Finish is tart with citrus fruits and farmyard hints.

Bottle. The pour was a murky medium yellow with an average sized (1-2 finger) white frothy head that reduced to just a thin foamy film that hung to the sides of the glass thus producing some excellent sheeting of lace. The aroma was harsh of a grain malt and a funky moldy yeast (Brett) with notes of peach, pears, lemon and a winey oak scent. The taste was slightly sweet and tart with a note of peach in the beginning then quickly got extremely sour with a big dose of citrus and a hint of wine and wood at the end. The flavor stuck around for a good long while after the swallow with a nice sour citrusy taste left to lie on the taste buds. Mouthfeel was just a tad under medium in body with a nice dry creamy texture and an extremely lively carbonation. Overall a seriously sour brew with great notes of citrus, wine and oak. Which all together make this a very delectable tasting beer.
