Beese (1783) - Watford, Hertfordshire, ENGLAND - AUG 2, 2013
Bottle purchased from Co-Op in Oakham, Rutland. Poured a dark brown/ ruby with a dissipating tan head. Aroma had hints of burnt malt, but also a rather skunky note, not very strong, especially for a 6.6% stout. Mouth feel was pretty watery, but some pleasant dark fruit and molasses with some roasted malts. Flavours were no where near as powerful as I expected. A little disappointing.

Cask at the Windsor Castle, Lye on the RB bus basheroo, 06/07/13. Dark mahogony brown with a good sized light tan head. Nose is light roast malts, bitter notes, dark toffee, light acidic waft - how very queer! Taste comprises lightly soured dark fruits, dark toffee, touch roasted malt, dates. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry roast finish. Average - came over a little soured, was it past its best ? Iíd expected more from this one on home territory.

The vanilla comes through strongly on the nose with some toasty notes. Pours black as yer íat with a thin head. The flavour is very nice - balanced dark notes of cocoa and hickory threaded with sweet vanilla and buttery cereals. Finish is warming and sweet with just a little earthy bitterness comes through.

Poured a dark mahogany with a frothy tan head. The aroma is rich bitter and slightly alcoholic. The flavour is big bitter, with loads of liqourice and somewhat creamy. A super beer and highly drinkable.

Are the words íMud Cityí a tromp líoeil? I hope they are when Dom is discussing his beery member. Some choc, and a little dark fruit, nice, a classic I know. Yes. Pixies.

UPDATED: JUN 27, 2014 Stout with a noticeable strength and feels heavy in the palate. The vanilla is noticeable although it seems to add a soapy character to the ale. What roasted malts there are, are very light.
