2.6 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: JUN 13, 2009 Jan 2007330ml bottle from BeersOfEurope. Fridge ice aroma from the forced carbonation which creeps into the flavour. Buttery lactose and corn notes immediately swamped by the roasted barley. Some frozen raspberry juice emerges. Everything soon settles and fades leaving a vague metallic taste. This is actually better than it sounds. I like dark beers - especially soft, gentle, flavoursome, session strength dark beers - which this is. The body is reasonable for the strength and in many respects this is little different to a Mild. I wouldnít be able to pick out on a blind tasting that this is a lager - though I would pick out that itís filtered and force-carbonated, even though the carbonation is soft and barely noticeable. This is like a cheap British keg mild. [2.2]
June 2009 330ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Pleasant roasted malt. Quite drinkable - no off flavours. This is an inoffensive and pleasant enough dark lager which has good roast malt flavours and caramel which are reminiscent of burnt toast and it pulls above itís weight. No major objections to this. 2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Little bit of a nutty, malty aroma. Dark brown color, with a beige head. The flavor was that of roasted nuts, but almost like they were burned. The aftertaste was mild, and the mouthfeel was light. Not a bad beer.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
I brought this back from Lisbon early this summer. Itís not as good as I recall. At first there was a nice tan had, but it quickly faded to a light bit on top. Same with the aroma: it was a nice beery, caramely, maltish character, but that became a basic caramel malt. The flavor and mouth were somewhat less. The mouth is just an overcarbonated blandness. Flavor flatish; not bad, but forgettable.

2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
After Portugalís petulant performance at the diving, sorry, soccer World Cup in Germany, itís tempting to give this 0.5 out of petty revenge. Yes, Iím a petty man. A very petty man. However, some faint residual sliver of decency prevents me from holding this beer accountable for Ronaldo and coís relentless diving, whining and all-round bad sportsmanship. Like the soccer team, the beer is good looking but it keeps its head a lot better. The aroma is as dull and muted as the meek surrender against France in the semi-final. There are faint roasted coffee grounds, caramelised sugars and chocolate milk. It has a fair mouthfeel for its 4.3% abv but thins badly in the swallow. Soft flavour mix and a short dry, finish. Souring chocolate milk and coffee bean astringency. Like the football team, it promises a lot but doesnít deliver. Then it falls over in the penalty box, appeals for a penalty and gets Rooney sent off. (330ml bottle, best before Dec 06)

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
A very nice, bitter, roasty dark beer, although with some too quick aftertaste. Not bad at all, probbaly one of the best you can find in Portugal for this kind of beer.
