Bottled from a supermarket in Albufeira, Portugal. Black appearance, very small brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, hint of coffee and liquorice. Malty and dry flavor, liquorice, somewhat bitter finish. Quite thin mouthfeel. Feels like a ílightí version of a schwarzbier.

Nice jet black beer with a nice head. Chocolate, some coffee, bready and smooth smoked aromas. To high carbonation, I prefer dry dark beers. Little sour at the end but good balanced with the bitterness.

Bottle: Nearly black, clear....with a short, frothy, tan head. Lightly smoky licorice, chocolate aroma. Flavour is watery cola, chocolate, caramel malt. Very light....coffee malt, water. Not bad, but very weak... Decent taste, though.

Discounted bottle from Yamaya. Promising hiss at opening and decent looks, rich black-brown with decent sized head. Caramelly, sweetish nose. Some chocolate, soy sauce, but of dishwater. Not bad I guess, but I'm a sucker for black beers so there's an extra few points right there.

Bottle on sale from Yamaya 170yen(so near the best by date) Ah it is a schwarzbier not a stout, that makes more sense then... still it poured a nice cola brown with a thick quickly dissipating beige head. The nose is roasty sweet malts, barley and light coffee. An effervescent carbonation reminiscent of sparkling water like Perrier on a fairly thin body. The taste is actually pretty good a well balanced mix of roasted malts, a bit of sweetness and some coffee. Not bad. Knowing it is a schwarzbier Iíd say itís quite true to style and among the nicer ones Iíve had lately... though actually it isnít a style I seek out.

Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 4C). Bottle 33 cl - Batch 3438650766. AROMA: roasted notes with a coffe and dark chocolate character and a mild sweet background. clean lager profile and no hop aromas. APPEARANCE: dark brown color with some ruby highlights. translucent. medium tanned head with average retention. TASTE: light malt flavour with a neutral character. moderate roasted notes of coffe and dark bitter chocolate lasting into the finish. low bitterness with a semi-dry finish. no noble hop flavours discernible and clean lager profile. PALATE: medium-light body with moderate carbonation. no astringency. OVERALL: a nice portuguese schwarzbier.
