COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Available in filtered 500ml bottles at Sainsburys supermarkets as part of their Taste The Difference range.
A rich, dark beer packed with intense flavours of chocolate and spicy liquorice. This style of beer was very popular in London during the 18th century and can trace its roots back to 1720. It is brewed with charred malt and English hops to give a truly unique flavour. This is Shepherd Neame’s delicious interpretation of this classic beer.

With a mild aroma and a dark crisp appearance, this portor looks the part but has a bitter tongue and a light palate. For the price its quite a nice porter.

Bottle from Sainsburys. Dark brown beer, white foam. Slightly high carbonation. Interesting, liquorice, hint blackcurrant, some ever so slightly harsh charry burnt malt, a tad sour. Shep Neame house character evident but seems to fit well. This exceeded my expectations.

Deep dark brown/cherry color with strong brown foam. Aromas of roasted malt, smoke and sweet. Palate, medium body, not the thickest texture, with nice long lasting smoky finish. Taste, bitter, smokey, malty and liquorice. Not bad, interesting and quite nice porter, would buy again.

Bottle, 500ml. Dark brown colour with a red hue. Malty chocolate aroma with musty leaves. Flavour is fairly sweet, malty with more leaves and a moderately bitter finish. Some citrus and coffee notes. A bit overcarbonated for my liking. Not bad.

Bottle courtesy of Mike. Pours mahogany with a small frothy beige head. Peppery coffee aroma. The aroma is lightly spicy with some nice coffee and liquorice flavours. The body is pretty thin, but otherwise quite an enjoyable one.

Bottle from Sainsbo’s, Chillesden Green. Deep brown with a tight tan head that quickly dissipates. Plenty of ashy roasted nuts on the nose. Hints of acidity. Some red fruit. Flavors skews bitter/dry. Sort of thin. Plenty of coffee, ash, and little else. Light body, prickly carbonation. Not one I’d quickly return to.

Light aroma and strong taste of the distracted chefs boiled dry pan burnt vegetables. Minimal lacey off white head over reddish dark brown beer. Slightly watery mouthfeel. Burnt malt, herbal bitterness (I’m not getting the licorice in this one!?). Medium dry finish of damp bonfire smoke. Fascinating.
