Cleanly malty with a drying finish, perhaps a few esters, and on occasion a faint bit of peaty earthiness (smoke). Most beers finish fairly dry considering their relatively sweet palate, and as such have a different balance than strong Scotch ales.

November 10th - I’ve heard of Scottish Ales and Exports, but not the two combined. So I am curious when approaching this brew to see what it might tell me about the hybrid of this style. The nose is rich with caramel, even salted caramel, adding a sweetness and salinity found in the heart of all salt water taffies, but this time flavored with extra malt for depth and darkness of scent. The flavor is also rich in caramel, maybe even more so, but a but tangier too. I also have the chance to try the draft non-nitro version, which is much tangier, almost like an Indian yogurt, and sweeter too. The tang I like, the sugar is overbearing, but the nitro version is tasty, and a great drink for people like me who would buy anything if it was drizzled with a salted caramel sauce.

25 apr 2015, tap at Saint Archer. Pink/amber, clear, no bubbles. Nose is yeasty bread. Med/thin and mildly fizzy. Raisin bread, sweet, malty, cherries, mild alcohol. Really good for a scotch ale.

On tap. Clear bronze hued pour with a large and lasting tan head. Malty, sweet and nutty aromas with low dark fruit esters. Flavors show a light smokey note, mild bitterness, leather, nutty. Slightly sweet feeling finish. Fuller carbonation, medium bodied, lightly boozy.

On tap @ Pizza Port San Clemente. Mahogany/brown pour with a khaki head. Aroma is sweet caramel, toffee, and chocolate. Some peat, smoke, and a touch of soap. Not bad. Flavor is mostly sweet and malty. A bit subtle/understated. Chocolate, toffee, and caramel. Hints of dark fruit and some light smoke. A touch soapy on the finish.
