English Barleywine, and an alcoholic one at that! It was inspired by Chris Landis’ winning entry in the 2010 Big Batch Brew Bash homebrew competition. This is a beer that not only will age well, but we are recommending aging it. It is clocking in at 11% ABV and could use some cellaring time. When enjoying it, we recommend serving it at around 60¬∞F. This really brings out the malt and fruit character in the beer (there isn’t any actual fruit in the beer). We were concerned that we had overhopped the beer when first tasting it in the fermenter, but the hop bitter has mellowed quite a bit. Having said that, it is on the hoppy side for an English Barleywine.

Bottle (thanks to blutt59). Orange, berry, raisin, caramel malt, and herbal hay aroma. Cloudy brown with minimal head. Very sweet orange, raisin, caramel malt, and moderately bitter herbal grass/alcohol flavor. Nice body. Very good.

Bottle. Muddy burgundy with a thin tan head that fizzles away immediately. The aroma blends caramel, raisin, leather and spiced rum. Some oxidation has taken hold in the flavor, lending a well-developed sherry character that works very well with the beer’s base of raisin, mint, orange and toasted dough. The thick, creamy medium body gives away that there’s a lot of booze in here, but the prodigious alcohol content is nigh unnoticeable in the flavor. Age has done this brew very well.

Pours ruby cherry oak cabinet wood in color with a small beige ring, almost no head. The aroma has a light sweetness and soft baked white bread profile. The flavor brings some sweet and oaky and root like bitter liqueur notes that don’t go down smoothly by any means.

Aged quite nicely now. Still a British malty Barleywine. The malt hits first, then the alcohol. So easy to drink. I do like the dark brown leather color too

Somehow missed rating this way back when but I think I’ve now had this three times in the past six months. And still a couple in the back of the fridge! Caramel and brown sugar, dark and candied fruit, a bit of woody earthiness.

Bottle from djd07, thanks again! Red/amber pour with a light beige head. Aromas of candied dark fruits and brown sugar. Flavor is similar. Slightly boozy but overall very nice.

Aged 4 years. Strong overtones of dried sugary fruit. Tastes pretty good, but nothing special.

Bottle - thanks to djd07! Pours clear red-orange with a small quickly diminishing tan head that leaves a bit of lacing. Aroma is bourbon and vanilla, toffee, fig. Flavor is quite sweet, lots of vanilla and dark sugars, just a touch of bitterness in the background and on the finish. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel. Pretty solid.

Bottle shared thanks to Dmac. Pours out muddy brown with a small off white head. Aroma is of sweet malt, moderately oxidized with some dark fruits and.mild alcohol. Taste is over oxidized, light caramel, sticky sweetness, booze, caramel and some booze.

12oz bottle via trade. Poured a deep mahogany brown with lighter edges and barely any head. Aroma of oxidation, wet cardboard, burnt sugar, amaretto, alcohol. Syrupy dry full body with soft carbonation. Flavor is just as bad as the aroma but add in some raisin and dates. Blah well past its prime.
