The aroma is distinctly Belgian and has a hint of fruit. As with most Belgian beers, the hops are primarily used for bitterness and provide little to no flavor or aroma. We kept the malt bill relatively simple to allow each malt to come through in its own way without getting all muddled together. The caramel and chocolate malts, in particular, work well together and you can taste each of them in the beer. We also added a large amount of Belgian Extra Dark Candi Syrup during fermentation, which darkened the color, imparted dark fruit-like flavors, and boosted the alcohol. Despite its high strength though, the alcohol only comes out as a warmth on the back end but is not over powering. The aftertaste is slightly sweet but also has a dryness that makes you want more.

Bottle from Rosebud Butternuts. Pours really dark, but strong light shows it as red! Head is slight creamy tan. Aroma of dark fruits - acidic plum seems descriptive. Full bodied. Flavor is dark plummy fruit. Itís somewhat acidic and definitely bitter. Smooth dark malt background. Itís not exactly dry, but the flavor is so good that it doesnít matter. Itís very delicious.

Bottle at BTBF and from a trade with angrypanda06. Pours with a near black, deep brown hued body. Aromas are toasty, malty, chocolate, grapenuts, dark fruit and molasses. Moderate to low esters. Flavors are medium dry and very fuselly hot. Moderate roast, molasses, boozy. Raisins. Almost a rye like spicy-crispness. Lively carbonation and quite hot/warming.

Bottle:   Deep garnet, thin frothy beige head, little lacing.   Soft alcohol, molasses, brown sugar, and faint dark pitted fruit on the nose.   Big punch of alcohol and raisins up front.   A touch spritzy, not too heavy.   Has a slight vinous aspect to it as it warms.   Very raisin like.   I wont go so far as to say its alcoholic, but its very very warming.   Also, its sweeter than most.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Fairly dry on the backside, and amazingly enough comes across as a bit of mulled spiced wine.   Seems a bit sharp and at times a bit acidic.   Lots of raisin and alcohol in this one.   Donít know that I have said this about any 12oz beer, but its a little tough to finish.   Also has a very heavy whole wheat breadiness to it.   At least it has enough sweetness to carry it, otherwise if it was overly bready, forget it.   Tiz okay, but could use some work.   Thanks for the bottle Bill!

Pour out of 12 oz bottle, dark brownish black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of dark fruit, caramel, molasses, hints of spice, earth in there as well. Taste is a mix of sweet fruits, lots of caramel, molasses, earth, nice dark fig, plum, lots of raisin, hints of a dry tannic like note, finishing fairly sweet. Pretty nice.
