The aroma is distinctly Belgian and has a hint of fruit. As with most Belgian beers, the hops are primarily used for bitterness and provide little to no flavor or aroma. We kept the malt bill relatively simple to allow each malt to come through in its own way without getting all muddled together. The caramel and chocolate malts, in particular, work well together and you can taste each of them in the beer. We also added a large amount of Belgian Extra Dark Candi Syrup during fermentation, which darkened the color, imparted dark fruit-like flavors, and boosted the alcohol. Despite its high strength though, the alcohol only comes out as a warmth on the back end but is not over powering. The aftertaste is slightly sweet but also has a dryness that makes you want more.

A: Inviting with the alcohol clearly there, but buried in Belgian candi sugar aroma rich with dark fruit notes such as black cherry, plum and raisin, and a good balance of sweetness and maltiness. A: Pours a dark brown, almost blood-burgundy color with little to no head. T: A light yeast character, lighter than the nose. Alcohol not as noticeable as in the nose. Toaste malt and baked bread notes although the dark fruits are much more apparent. Figs, plums, maybe even chocolate covered cherries. P: Perhaps just a touch thin, but medium carbonation and a medium body. O: As a major fan of all things Belgian, I have had a great many quads, including a great many American-brewed quads. I think this is probably the best American quad I have ever had.

Bottle... Pours cloudy and brown with a fleeting, white head. The aroma is a swirl of cola, toasted malts, dark candy sugar, dried dark fruits and caramel. Full-bodied with soft carbonation. The flavor is toasty, roasty and sweet. Well-bittered for near-perfect balance - unusual for this style. Finishes a bit acrid and acidic with dark fruit tanginess. Bottle generously provided by Rosebud butternuts!

22oz bottle in a tulip. Pours dark brown with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of sweet malts, some spicy yeast, more caramel, dark fruits, and hints of EtOH. Flavor the same with a decent blend. Average texture. A solid quad, I would have liked this more back in the day when quads were my favorite style.

Aroma is a great blend of molasses, brown sugar, chocolate, caramel and plum. Nothing but sweetness. I would like to eat this for dessert. Very dark brown color with a virtually nonexistent white head of foam. Taste is not as sweet as the aroma with a decent booze burn at the end. Nothing but malt and dark fruit. Aftertaste brings back some of the brown sugar from the aroma. Not very complex or strong. Palate is pretty weak for the style. Overall I would say this brewery took a stab at a category that is packed with great beers and it was mostly a swing and a miss.

Bottle: Deep, ruby-red & mahogany-brown pour with a small trace of khaki foam that settles quickly. Aroma loaded with heavy caramel coated prunes, Candi sugar sweetness, butter toffee, raisins, dates, prunes, moderate black cherry, a touch of alcohol, & a hint of licorice. Flavor has a nice spicy & zesty quality from the Belgian yeast. Almost clove-like with a big earthy & leafy backlash. Prune, Candi sugar, mild brown sugar, raisin, dates, anise, & a little bit of sherry alcohol tones in the finish. Dry caramel, dark fruit, & booze lingers long into the aftertaste with a hint of spicy yeast. Typically not a quad lover, but this is pretty nice.

Bottle shared by Dan at my house. Pours a deep brown thick and oily in a snifter. Not much head at all. Aroma is dark fruits (raisin, prunes, figs), sweet brown sugar cookie dough, caramel, toffee, and chocolate. The taste is brown sugar, cookie dough, dark chocolate, caramel, toffee, and roasted malts. Medium full body, chewy. Finish is slight boozy and warm.

Bottle @ home from the rot box. Pours a deep brown, somewhat hazy appearance with a thin brown head. Candy syrup is heavy in the nose. Some brown sugar, dates, figs, and plums as well but it smells awfully sweet. Moderate full body. A little bit oxidized. Caramel, burnt sugar, apples, and plums in the flavor. Ok - maybe a bit old at this point.
