COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewer Casey Motes’ Description: The goal of this beer was to make a Belgian/American hybrid using west coast American hops and rye to emulate the fruit and spices often found in Belgian beers. The beer pours a bright golden color. The nose is a mixture of phenolics from the Belgian wit yeast and light citrus from the American hops with a touch of graininess. Rye adds sweetness and complexity to the pilsner and aromatic malts. The spice of the rye is somewhat subdued at lower temperatures but becomes more apparent as the beer warms. Cascade and centennial hops were used for both flavor and aroma, adding floral and citrus notes to play off the strengths of the yeast. Belgian candi sugar was added during fermentation to bump up the alcohol while allowing the beer to avoid finishing too sweet. The dry finish hides the 10% alcohol nicely and makes you want to take another sip. This beer is best enjoyed at 50°F to 55°F. Pours a bright golden amber color. There’s a small head that dissipates rather quickly, then leaves a circle of white tiny foam around the rim of the glass. The aroma is lemon zest, a grassy note, some light grains, and a slight dirt aroma. The flavor is yeasty and spicy. The rye really pushes to the front. I poured it somewhat warm, and as it warmed even more the spiciness was prominent. Not really a fan.

Bottle. Pours crystal clear orange, small off-white head that dissipates fairly quickly with good lacing. Aroma is grainy, corn, grass, some oakiness. Flavor is medium sweet, light bitter, malty. Medium body. Did not really do it for me.

A beguiling beer. Slightly sweet, slightly fruity Belgian yeast notes. Amazingly well hidden ABV. Showcases Belgian flavors prominently, and very quaffable.

Zwanze Day at the Kernel. Keg. Cheers to Colin for this one. Clear gold beer, good pale cream colour head. Airy palate, semi dry with mild fine carbonation. Creamy malts. An odd bitter almond note. Nuts! Subtle dried fruits, Sweet floralness and a very light pinch of spice. Light dry finish. Slightly odd but quite enjoyable.

Bottle split at Mother Arch during the 2014 Zwanze Celebrations, from an IP trade 20/09/14. Clear golden with a moderate off white covering that dissipates then retains. Nose is sweet, toffee, caramel, figs, candied fruits, raisens, light spice. Taste comprises sweet licks, spice, caramel, light yeast tones, dates. Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok - a little overly sweet though, glad to have split this with a few folks!

Bottle thanks to Colin. It pours clear golden with a small white head. The nose is sweet, earth, straw, juicy, wood, vanilla and spice. The taste is bitter-sweet, boozy, pear, melon, apple, sugar, straw and boooooze with a sweetish finish. Fullish body, fine carbonation and sticky mouth-feel. Not much depth. Sticky. Ok.

Bottle from Whit and Zac enjoyed in PCB when the humidity was an 11. A fairly true to form Belgian strong ale that wasn’t too big and bold; mild enough to call it refreshing on a warm day. A little fruity with a hint of booze. Nice.

A sweet malty aroma teams up with hints of Belgian yeast, bananas, and spice. Pours a cloudy orange-amber with a white ring and minimal lacing. The taste is balanced toward the malty side of the flavor spectrum. Complex malt tastes become more apparent as the beer warms. Bananas, cloves, and a polite sweetness. Medium body with medium carbonation. Satisfying mouthfeel. Overall, I enjoyed this beer and think its a good example of a Belgian Strong Ale (Dubble).

Bottle thanks to Rightcross55 I believe. Pours a mostly clear amber color with a small head that fades to a thin ring. Aromas are Belgian yeast, rye grain, and light banana. Tastes sugary sweet with lots of Belgian yeast. Spicy rye shows up big in the finish with some light juicy citrus as well. Medium body. Overall, it’s too sugary for me to love but the spicy rye and citrus hops make this somewhat unique.
