BelgianBeerGal (1035), Sabbatical in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Jul 1, 2008 Bottle compliments of bu11zeye. Dark, oil black pour with the darkest head I’ve ever seen. Very still. Aroma of milk chocolate, roasted malt and coffee- also some soy sauce. Pleasant flavour with some bitterness compliments of hops and darker chocolate. Pretty easy drinking.
sebletitje (579), Tampa, Florida, USA Nov 30, 2008 courtesy of tpd975, thanks for cracking that one open.
Pours deep black, brownish head, plenty of ncie yellow lacing.
Aroma of oats and some intense roasted scents. Right there, I knew I had a winner.
Taste. Felt like having the best of a coffee cup in a beer. Pure intense favors and mouthfeel.
Loaded with light coffee, nice chocolate malts and oats.
mreusch (482), Olathe, Kansas, USA Nov 17, 2008 12oz. bottle, with another thanks to Gregis. Pours a dark black with a dark brown head, minimal lacing that’s gone instantly leaving only a thin ring, no lacing to speak of. Aroma is dark fruits, bakers chocolate, and maybe some molasses. The flavor really lost me on this one, heavily roasted/burnt, with the dark fruits and chocolate pushed
to the background. The roast is just a bit too much on this one, with a dry, chalky, almost dirt-like finish. Glad for the chance to finally try, thanks a bunch Greg! GAManiac (446), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Oct 24, 2008 Pours pitch black in the glass with only a hint of light penetrating the edges. The head is a small, tan and short lived though it lingers for a while as a bubbly ring. Lacing is minimal.
The aroma is dominated by the massive dark chocolate malt backbone and complemented with vanilla licorice and some dark fruit. Hints of coffee, but not a lot.
The taste is rich, sweet chocolate up front with a decent roasted malt presence in the middle. The finish brings back the sweetness with lots of dark fruits and vanilla.
The mouthfeel is silky smooth with less carbonation than I expected. It absolutely coats the mouth with the chocolate malts. Highly recommended. PhillyBeer2112 (1887), Orange Park, Florida, USA Oct 20, 2008 Thanks to Peter and SecretSanta for bottles of this! Pours a very dark inky black, large dark brown head, faded fast. Aroma was big on roast, burnt chocolate, ash, and even some caramel or molasses. Flavor similar, very sweet and roasty, slightly burnt. A bit one dimensional, and seems like an example of being big for the sake of being big. BeerHawk (801), Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA Oct 16, 2008 Bottle shared by Suttree at the Pre-Brewers’ Jam Warm-up. Poured black with a thin tan head that settled to a ring. Nice aromas of chocolate, coffee, and nut backing. The flavor had much the same with hints of spice. Medium to full body and sweet.
