Commercial Description:
This is a big, malty, hoppy barleywine. Yet with all of the intense flavors, they meld together to create a well-balanced big beer. The nose has a strong resiny hop note. The taste starts with a combination of the malty sweetness and spicy hops with both flavors magnified by the high alcohol level. The spiciness carries through the middle and finishes with a satisfyingly dry bitter. It was brewed with 2 row pale, Caramunich and Special B malts with brown sugar added in the kettle and hopped with 225 lbs of Columbus hops including 44 lbs that were dry hopped. We used our Saint Arnold yeast strain which gives a rich, creamy mouthfeel to the brew. It is unfiltered and will clarify with aging. Enjoy at 45°F or warmer. This beer will age well. Original Gravity: 1.094 Final Gravity: 1.019

12oz bottle acquired through multiple trades poured into a tulip. Pours a murky caramel brown that shows bright orange when held up to the light. The head is a rocky and off-white, leaving very good lacing before settling in as a sizable cap. Citrus hops jump out of the bottle with lots of grapefruit and some orange zest. There is plenty of caramel malt sweetness as well as some floral pine hops and a hint of booze. Big complex nose on this one. The taste is a toned down version of the aroma, starting off with a quick hit of citrus up front. The big caramel malt and brown sugar presence that I got in the nose is much less prevalent in the taste and the finish brings back the hops for a sticky bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied with good carbonation and more bitter than most barleywines. This is another good effort from SA and I continue to enjoy their Divine Reserve series. A hoppy barleywine whose taste doesn’t quite live up to the excellent aroma.

Lightly hazed orange copper with a light tan head. Floral fuller nose. Reasonable caramel. Light spice. Light alcohol and fruity gum. Medium to slippery body. Sweet caramel, creamy. A little fruity. A strong dose of hops, floral. Light astringency that really lingers. A rather nice barleywine.

Bottle. Body-hazy dark brown with a loose foamy off white head. Nose-PNW hops, unsweet grapefruit, very medium American barleywine nose. Taste-bitter, low to medium sweet, sawdust, orange, alcohol on the back end, good low dark fruits, Dr. Pepper, earth floor, very well spiced, high CO2, hops are more upfront than the malts, sweetens a bit as it warms. A very good “medium” all the way through barleywine.

Bottle sample at a tasting. Thanks a lot peter for this bottle! Deep red-amber color. Aroma of resinous hops, malt, bread and caramel. Bitter flavor with pine, a bit of citrus and a good dose of sweet malt, caramel and some fruitiness. Medium-full body.

2008 Bottle from lb4lb - Thanks Deniz - Pours copper with a medium off white head...aroma is a pure fruit malt bomb with a hop finish...flavour is similar, fruity malt front, citrus hop giant...good depth, finishes bitter...can’t help but notice how similar it is to about 5 Lagunitas brews, but stil a fun one...

Pours a light brown souce with tan head, extreme pleasant aroma of fruits like apricot pineapple, some sweet flavors of orange vanilla and cheese with pleasant grapefruit hoppiness, long sweet tasty finish. Amazing beer.

Bottle in trade with KAggie97. Thanks! Murky brown body with an off white head. Aroma of dark fruit, good hop presence, and alcohol noticed. A bit like Bells Third Coast Old Ale, a good thing. The only down part to this beer is that it is a little rough and you can taste the ABV. This is a little surpising as I’d assume this would have mellowed after over a year of age. Still very solid beer here.
