COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a bold, malty, smoky Scotch Ale. It pours a deep amber brown. It was quite cloudy at the time of bottling but will clarify as it ages. The nose is full of smoky toffee notes. The taste opens with sweet malt and spice, then the alcohol comes up with a light residual sweetness on the finish. A balanced smoky flavor is in this beer from start to finish, although it never is the dominant character. It was brewed with 2-Row, Biscuit, Dark Crystal, Amber, Peated, Caramunich and Wheat malt. It is hopped early with Hallertau Tradition and late with Hallertau Hersbrucker. We fermented DR8 with a traditional Scotch Ale yeast. It is unfiltered. Enjoy at 45°F or warmer. This beer was inspired by Phillip Kaufman’s winning entry in the 2009 Big Batch Brew Bash.

12oz. bottle from recent trade. Home in snifter. Pours a dark, nearly opaque brown with almost no head. No lacing. Aroma of peat, smoke, dark fruits, barrel and scotch booze. The taste was first smoke and peat and then a sweet dark fruit and booze finish. You also get some toffee and caramel. Medium to full body. Finish is oak, booze and caramel.

Bottle - thanks Cloaker! Pours cloudy chestnut, small beige head that leaves nice residual and good lacing. Aroma is rich and malty, dark sugars, a bit of smoke, dark breads, caramel. Flavor is medium sweet and medium bitter, heavy malty, smoky, nice contrasting bitterness. A touch of acidity is present, giving a bit of sharpness. Full body, rich mouthfeel. Very tasty beverage.

Peat smoke seems to have faded a bit from what I remember. Still a very nice caramel and leather aroma with more figs and raisins in the taste.

I’ve had this bottle in the fridge for a while now. Murky brown color with only the barest fringe of bubbles for a head. Aged beer nose with copious amounts of dried fruit, dark sugar and warming alcohol. This is a sweet beer with tons of brown sugar and molasses over raisins and prunes and fruit cake. Nice alcohol bloom in the finish. Great patina on an aged beer.

Wildly mature and deep at this point. Great nose of tobacco and leather, lightly malty. Murky red color. Flavors are sweet malt with a full finish.

Aged 2-3 years, pours light brown caramel color lots of sediment haha, sweet butterscotch, caramel slight smoky flavor. Great scotch ale, above a Rahr Iron Thistle any day... wish it wasn’t just a limited brew...

12 oz. bottle from ericandersnavy- thanks again, Eric! Pours a hazy amber color with a tiny off-white head that settles into a lasting ring. Aroma of dust, cardboard, wood, peanut brittle, brown sugar, dates, and earth. Flavor of caramel, brown sugar, peat, wood, earth, figs, and dates. Medium-bodied, with a smooth, boozy mouthfeel and low carbonation. A bit past its prime, but solid.

Notes from my backlog: Deep hazy amber with a creamy tan head. Richly malty. Some toasted toffee, almost chocolaty with a sweet vanilla hint, tobacco and ginger snap cookies. Complex nose. Creamy body- richly malty. Toffeeish and toasted spices flavors, mild tobacco and dries out with a graham cracker note and biscuit. Nice malt depth. Awesome.
