A traditional India Pale Ale, the Elissa IPA is very hoppy with a properly balanced malty body. Elissa has huge hop additions in the kettle that give it a wonderful bitterness and is then dry-hopped in the fermenter to create the pleasant floral, hoppy nose. Our reverse osmosis water makes the bitter very soft with no harsh notes to it. The maltiness is derived from British Maris Otter malt. Its rich flavor stands up to the hops that would otherwise dominate this beer. The Elissa is an authentic version of the IPA style which was first brewed in the late 1700’s in England for transport to the British colony of India. The high level of hops combined with higher alcohol levels worked as preservatives to keep the beer good over the long voyage to India where conditions were not conducive to brewing. This beer is named after ELISSA, a tall ship now moored in Galveston. Ships like ELISSA were used in transporting IPAs to India. Saint Arnold is donating a portion of the proceeds of this beer to the Galveston Historical District for preservation of this ship.

An orange beer with sediment floating around and a small white head. The aroma is very sweet and dominated by grass. The flavor is also sweet and very hoppy with the hop oils coming thru, the end is dry and very hoppy. Nice IPA. Thanks to Fly for letting me fly home with this from GABF.

Hazy amber color. Medium body structure, not sticky but with a good malt flavor, strong hopping, well aromatic, with oils. The aroma is simpler.

Bottle, 12oz. It pours a lively, clear dark golden body and a small, lasting off-white head that leaves lacings. It’s a bit malty on the nose, lighty bready and with some caramel, but it’s the hops that plays the leading role. Grapefruit, some pine cones and a grassy hint. It’s almost effervescent on the palate, with a full body, quite dry, but with some residual sweetness. Caramel hints in the flavor, quite bitter and grapefruity. Some grassy notes in the finish which has mostly bitterness and pink grapefruit. A quite nice one, but somehow it weighs in a little bit too light, and is missing some complexity. 130829

On tap at Gbbf 2013. Very hazy dirty gold colour. Feash pink grapefruit hop aroma. Really tasty and just what I want a USA ipa to be. Some sweetness but otherwise pretty damn good. Love the pink grapefruit and bitterness on the finish.

UPDATED: OCT 18, 2007 (Bottle) Now this is beer the state of Texas can be proud of!!! Pours a clear copper with an average-sized off-white head. Aroma is a nice balance of citrus, pine and sweet malt. Medium body with a creamy texture. Good balance of malt and hops flavor. I will be drinking plenty more of these!

A: The pour is a clear amber/copper color with a thin white head and sticky lacing. S: The nose is primarily of orange notes from the hops with some sweet caramel malts. T: The flavors are sweet and malty with plenty of caramel and bread. The finish is mildly piney and bitter, the only main traces of hops on the flavor. M: The flavor is medium bodied with a moderate level of tingly carbonation. D: Not a bad IPA, and one of the better ones from the good ol’ state of Texas.
