COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A traditional India Pale Ale, the Elissa IPA is very hoppy with a properly balanced malty body. Elissa has huge hop additions in the kettle that give it a wonderful bitterness and is then dry-hopped in the fermenter to create the pleasant floral, hoppy nose. Our reverse osmosis water makes the bitter very soft with no harsh notes to it. The maltiness is derived from British Maris Otter malt. Its rich flavor stands up to the hops that would otherwise dominate this beer. The Elissa is an authentic version of the IPA style which was first brewed in the late 1700’s in England for transport to the British colony of India. The high level of hops combined with higher alcohol levels worked as preservatives to keep the beer good over the long voyage to India where conditions were not conducive to brewing. This beer is named after ELISSA, a tall ship now moored in Galveston. Ships like ELISSA were used in transporting IPAs to India. Saint Arnold is donating a portion of the proceeds of this beer to the Galveston Historical District for preservation of this ship.

UPDATED: AUG 6, 2004 My parents brought this back from Texas. This is a fantastic IPA. From the red gold colour to the floral grapefruit nose I had high expectations before I even took a sip and this delivered. At first the taste was citrus with a nice dry bite on the finish. Some pine added to the complexity as it warmed, with a nice malt backbone throughout.

Hand pumped cask conditioned barrel at the Gingerman in Austin, TX. Beautiful orange amber cascade settled to a hazy light copper under a creamy off-white head. Thick curtains of lacing. Aroma of pine and grapefruit. Citrusy flavor with milk chocolate and lightly toasted malt. Velvetty rich texture and a smooth, mildly bitter finish. My first hand pumped cask conditioned IPA and hopfully not my last. A very pleasant surprise in the heart of Texas.

Thanks go to bu11zeye for this Texas beauty. Poured a clear effevescent amber with a fizzy white head. Really fruity aroma with big notes of tangerine and perhaps a bit of grapefruit... really, really tangeriney. Flavor is refreshingly dry and bitter with notes of bitter grapefruit, a bit of that tangerine, and perhaps some pine, with just a shade of dry toffee in the finish. An easy drinking IPA that doesn’t try to overwhelm you but offers nice floral and fruity hop flavor and a refreshing bitterness that acts as a beautiful session companion. Nicely done.

12oz bottle, lots of large, suspended yeast on the bottom. Pours buttery gold with a smallish, pervasive head. Aroma is very fragrant, lots of sweet floral notes, maybe a touch of pine. The flavor starts with a nice maltiness, followed by an initintially intense, but short lived bitterness and floral and piney flavors. The finish is resiny and there is a lingering bitterness. Good stuff, thanks Tim!

A very nicely balanced IPA, a nice malty start but plenty of tasty hops in the finish- not too harsh like some IPAs. An excellent session beer- wish we could get it in GA.

UPDATED: OCT 24, 2005 I was surprised by this one. Expected something close to a pale ale... nope. Pours a murky floaties-rich orange with no head, but bubbling carbonation evident. Bottle of questionable age though - I’m pretty sure it’s been on the shelf a number of months. Nice grapefruity hop aroma. Taste is a pleasant bitter orange hop, with a bit of malt - nearly hints of a light barleywine. Mouthfeel has a slight thickness to it. I like it, and would love to get my hands on a fresh bottle. A worthy Texas beer. Can’t wait to drink it again.

A good solid "old world’ IPA. There’s plenty of carbonation in this one which will give you a good amount of head. There is plenty of of citrus nots as well as malty and of course hops. The head was in between sticky and clean somewhere. The only thing I didn’t like was the aftertaste had somewhat of a burnt flavor. Otherwise, this is a solid IPA that I could drink a lot of if I lived in the area that I purchased it.
