Commercial Description:
A traditional India Pale Ale, the Elissa IPA is very hoppy with a properly balanced malty body. Elissa has huge hop additions in the kettle that give it a wonderful bitterness and is then dry-hopped in the fermenter to create the pleasant floral, hoppy nose. Our reverse osmosis water makes the bitter very soft with no harsh notes to it. The maltiness is derived from British Maris Otter malt. Its rich flavor stands up to the hops that would otherwise dominate this beer. The Elissa is an authentic version of the IPA style which was first brewed in the late 1700’s in England for transport to the British colony of India. The high level of hops combined with higher alcohol levels worked as preservatives to keep the beer good over the long voyage to India where conditions were not conducive to brewing. This beer is named after ELISSA, a tall ship now moored in Galveston. Ships like ELISSA were used in transporting IPAs to India. Saint Arnold is donating a portion of the proceeds of this beer to the Galveston Historical District for preservation of this ship.

12oz bottle, courtesy of lb4lb, I believe. Thanks, Deniz! Pours a hazy, orange-amber color; decently sized off-white head with fine-bubbled lacing. Pleasant soft, earthy and floral hoppiness in the aroma; some balancing British malts underneath. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: chewy hops (earthy, predominantly, and floral); some breadiness and biscuity notes coming through as well; balanced, tasty IPA. Medium finish: breadiness, dough, and some lingering bitterness; ends dry.

2008 Bottle - Thanks be to lb4lb...pours a dk orange with a small head, aroma is grapefruit, grass and floral hops, slightly sweet...flavour follows, malty more than bitter but a nice balance, definitely hides the alcohol well, fun beer...

12 oz. bottle courtesy of secret santa. Pours a hazy orange amber color with a medium sized frothy beige head. The aroma had the standard citrus hops and caramel malt found in many IPAs but added honey and floral notes as well. The flavor is well balanced between the caramel malt and citrusy hops. I also get some pine and floral notes. This is light/medium bodied and at times seems a bit watery. This is easy to drink and a good choice on a hot summer day.

12oz bottle. Pours cloudy dark orange with a moderate sized offwhite head, specks of lace. Smells grassy hoppy with a major malt presence. Big and slightly sweet malts on the nose. Tastes slight hoppy grassy with quite a bit of nuttiness, from the malts I think. Malts are sweet as well. Medium body, good carbonation.

not bad and not great, but just really good. Perhaps Jerry Quarry just fought in the wrong era.

Second bottle from mar today! This one is really awesome as well...I think a tad underrated. Amber pour with a medium sized head that sticks around and offers some nice lacing. Aroma is christmas trees and sweet malt. Flavor is very pine tree like and has a pretty nice kick bitterness from the hops. A nice malt bacground makes this well balanced. Very good.
