Commercial Description:
A traditional India Pale Ale, the Elissa IPA is very hoppy with a properly balanced malty body. Elissa has huge hop additions in the kettle that give it a wonderful bitterness and is then dry-hopped in the fermenter to create the pleasant floral, hoppy nose. Our reverse osmosis water makes the bitter very soft with no harsh notes to it. The maltiness is derived from British Maris Otter malt. Its rich flavor stands up to the hops that would otherwise dominate this beer. The Elissa is an authentic version of the IPA style which was first brewed in the late 1700’s in England for transport to the British colony of India. The high level of hops combined with higher alcohol levels worked as preservatives to keep the beer good over the long voyage to India where conditions were not conducive to brewing. This beer is named after ELISSA, a tall ship now moored in Galveston. Ships like ELISSA were used in transporting IPAs to India. Saint Arnold is donating a portion of the proceeds of this beer to the Galveston Historical District for preservation of this ship.

Pours a hazy golden amber color. Thin white head with moderate retention and good lacing. Aroma is strong piney hops and some sweet citrus. Slightly astringent flavor with floral hops with light maltiness. Medium mouthfeel with a bitter and lasting dry finish. A decent IPA, but nothing spectacular. However, if you get a chance, don’t pass up the cask conditioned version of this one--it is phenomenal. Very smooth drinking with lots of floral hops. Great for IPA fans.

16oz bottle. Medium amber, slightly hazy, moderate off-white head. Nice hops flavor, but less hoppy than typical IPAs. I like to tell my fellow Texans that this is my of beers brewed in Texas.

This one came to me from mhewes, just like a couple of other Saint Arnold beers, The pour looked like a typical IPA, but slightly paler than the typical orange-amber, and displayed a good deal of chill haze. The smell was clean citric hops and a note of honey. The taste was a little less typical, as it was sweeter than I was anticipating. The hops were more or less in balance with the malts, so this tasted more like a slightly amped up APA, than a hop driven IPA. Nice and sticky in the mouth due to the residual sugars, and aftertaste was chalky. This was a very drinkable beer, but not a very memorable one.

Bottle courtesy of Kevin poured a clear copper with a lingering ring of amber foam. Aromas of carmel, earthiness, light grapefruit, light pine and a hint of tropical fruit. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, earthiness, pine and light tropical fruit with a smooth lingering moderatly bitter finish.

12 oz. bottle received in trade with MaltoMeal. Beautiful amber, golden pour with a slight haze to it. Thin, receding white head. Huge floral hop nose. Fairly substantial palate. Beer has some body to it. Intense hop flavor without being overwhelmingly bitter. Nicely balanced with a malt backbone.
