Our Cascadian dark is essentially a very dark version of an IPA. The secret is to balance the hop flavor with the black malts. We used a combination of Chinook Columbus, Centennial, Simcoe hops in this ale.

Saint Arnold Icon Blue has a medium, beige head and a dark, yet clear, brown appearance, with thin lacing left behind. The aroma is very fruity, and I found it was of apricot. Taste is also quite fruity, but, here, I was picking up grapefruit. There is also sweetness, brown bread crust, and mild bitterness, but the overriding note is of the fruit. Mouthfeel is slick and medium, and Saint Arnold Icon Blue finishes semi-dry, refreshing, and easily drinkable. The 7% alcohol is just not picked up with this ale. Overall, it’s delightful, and I rate it as such. RJT

Bottle. Pours a very dark amber and ruby hue with small beige head that quicky diminishes. The aroma is floral and pine. Medium mouthfeel with light bitterness strong pine hop and nice light dry finish. A very black IPA from Saint Arnold.

Dark dark brown with ruby edges. Medium coarse khaki head. Piney aroma. Mild aroma from black malts. A charcoal/chalky aroma. Light to medium mouthfeel. Lots of pine in flavor as well. Offset by a little bit of citrusy hops. Malt has a fairly spicy character and some roastiness but not much malt impact overall. Pretty god. ---Rated via iPhone

Looks like I like this beer quite a bit more than the average. Beer pours dark brown with a totally retained beige colored head. Aromas of pine and chocolate. Enjoyable sweet and bitter flavors. Not sure why the scores are so low, but me likes it!

Deep brown almost black in the glass. Minimal head. Aroma of toasted malt and hops. Chocolate malt and balanced hop bitterness on the palate.

Black in the glass... strong citrus grapefruit aroma. Clean bitter roasted flavors mixed with a slight bittersweet citrus aftertaste. Overall, a drinkable... not to complex but tasty and enjoyable.

on draft, cask, and bottle- even the brewpub version brewed in galveston .. . pours a deep brown black .. grassy green hops, mild roast .. . solid beer all around, one of my favorite black ipa’s to date .. . . i am insulted. is this a book report or a witch hunt?

This is probably the best Saint Arnold beer I’ve had so far. One of my favorite styles, but lacking the robustness I like in the best versions. Still, has a bit of roastiness and the bitterness I like. Tried in Houston in 2013.
