COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The recipe for Amarillo Hefe came from a beer I developed for my sister and brother in law’s wedding. They wanted a hefeweizen for their reception, and I decided to put my own twist on it. Since some people like to put lemon or orange slices in hefes, I figured I could replace that with the bright citrus flavor and aroma of Amarillo hops. The base beer starts as a fairly traditional Hefe. As fermentation starts to putter out, a healthy dose of Amarillos are dry hopped to complement the banana and clove flavors of the yeast. The balance gives an impression of added spice flavor, but no spice was added. Just malt, hops, yeast, and water. Enjoy!

Cask (gravity) @ GBBF 2013, Great British Beer Festival, London Olympia, Hammersmith Road, London, England W14 8UX.

Murky matt medium orange color with a small, fizzy, virtually none lacing, fully diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, wheat, moderate to light heavy yeasty, tart fruit, fruity, yeast. Flavor is moderate sweet and light acidic with a average duration, yeast, tart, fruity. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is flat. [20130813]

12 oz bottle courtesy of an extra via trade on BA. Thanks. Pours a nice hazed golden amber hue, a gentle darker orange amber glow in the body with some frothy offwhite/beige head that dies to a loose layer, dies down, laces small overall. Aromas are decent fruity ester, touches of citrus, melon, apple, and clove. Some decent American hop varieties with spicy yeasty life, some dryness, bready malt and flaked wheat. A touch of honey, orange, and faint banana. Citrusy grapefruit, some dryness, and straw. Initial is lighter end of the fold, some bready malt, flaked wheat, banana and apple, touches of pear, lemon, and florals. A gentle to decent hopping tickles the palate, some decent yeastiness, clove. Touches of bread, straw, gentle honeycrisp. The backend is a bit dry and yeasty, straw and a bit of grass. Faint spiciness lingers on, dry hops and yeast. Some crisp bready and flaked wheat malts, grainy and gentle fruit sweetness. That kick of American hops on the nose gives some complexity, makes this pretty inviting. While the Hefe itself doesn’t offer much bitterness or fruit, it is pretty tasty and drinkable with some nice fruit, a bit of bitterness and pizazz overall. Solid.

Cask @ GBBF 2013. The pour’s murky yellow with a tight white head. The nose is straight banana pie. A bit of green grass root. The taste is is fully of pissy lemon cake. Moderate banana. A bit dull on the palate. Lacks carbonation. Medium body, a bit sticky. Merely OK.

Decent hefeweizen. I’m not sure the Amarillo hops added that much character. The nose was hoppier than normal but the wheat character was still there as well. It was a standard golden yellow with a white head. Average weight and carbonation. There was wheat, citrus, clove and banana with a stronger hop bitterness at the end. Good, just not great.

Draft at GBBF 2013 - London. Pours cloudy yellow with a mild, white cream head. The nose has light wheat, some juicy lemon. Light to medium sweet flavor with grapefruit, lemon and modest wheat. Light-medium in body with fine carbonation. Sweet finish with more juicy citrus a la grapefruit, lemon and melon. Nice stuff.

Bottle:   Straw, thin white frothy head, little lacing.   Strong mash nose, no real clove or banana.   Seems a little mealy with slight cat urine.   Taste aint much better.   Nothing about this screams Hefe, let alone German.   Average body and mouthfeel.   Finishes like sweet mash.   Is this beer done?   Sweet mealy mash beer, or maybe an overly sweet small beer of some off flavored German Hefe that happens to have no clove or banana.   Not what I was expecting... at all.

Just the sort of interesting experiment I’m always whining that St. Arnold doesn’t do enough of. Wheat, lemon, banana and spices. Hmm, sounds like a tangy banana bread.
