Santo is a black Kölsch, which technically doesn’t exist as a style, but this is as close as we can come to describing it. Essentially it is brewed using a Kölsch recipe with the addition of Munich and black malt. It is light bodied and floral yet with a distinct dark malt flavor. Our goal was to create a dark yet refreshing beer that would pair perfectly with a plate of enchiladas. The label artwork is by Houston artist Carlos Hernandez who is known for his Day of the Dead Rock Star series of paintings and prints.

Saint Arnold Santo is an unusual style beer that seems to work. Little caramel aroma coming from a dark pour with a fluffy white head that holds nicely. Taste is does not match the dark pour, but has yeast notes like a wheat beer and no dark beer expectations. Listed as a Schwarzbier and described as a black Kolsch, it doesn’t seem to taste like you would think either would. Finish is fairly clean. Santo defies description but is tasty in its own right.

This is a fine beer. It is moderate in malt flavor, hop flavor, body, and color. It is well balanced and a good drink when a more substantial beer is not available. I enjoyed it.

Pours a brown color with off-white head. Dark malts, roast, and floral notes on the palate. Finishes with more roast.

Pours a clear brown with a tan-beige head. Smoky nose. Smooth and full, with a bit of a scrubby texture. Smoky, roasted flavor with some sweetness for a nice balance.

Tap. Dark brown pour with minimal head. Grain, grass, caramel. Minimal aroma. Minimal taste. Slightly sour sweet finish. Nice carbonation but not exciting

Bottle - pours a dark ruby brown - a bit fizzy at first, but a fairly creamy head settles in quickly - nose is moderate dry mineral, some Munich malt character, light caramelized sugars, a touch of smoke - light bodied, fairly creamy texture - flavor is fairly dry, with some light roast, moderate mineral, light bitterness, light acidity - mild smoke and sole Munich sweetness round out the finish - a simple, clean, and enjoyable dark beer for a hot day.

This was surprisingly delicious to me. Poured black with light getting through, light beige head. Smell was rich roasty coffee, and very fresh and inviting. close to a 9 on aroma. Taste was roasty, but light bodied and crisp and refreshing. Great roasty malt flavor and balancing bitterness. Very enjoyable and crisp medium body. I’d definitely get more of this.

Serving: from tap at Tolbert’s Restaurant. Aroma: light caramel malt. Appearance: very small, off-white, initial head with no lacing and fully diminishing longevity. Cloudy, dark-red body. Taste: moderately sweet initial flavor and finish with average duration. Palate: light-to-medium body, watery texture and soft carbonation. Overall: interesting. Different from Koelsch, not overly sweet, easy to drink, but nothing too exciting.

[Tap] Very dark brown pour without a ton of head on top. Light floral and dusty grain aromas. Taste is of whole grain bread, grass, hazelnut and sweet yeasty notes. Lighter body is appropriate for the style. Tasting notes from 2012.
