Santo is a black Kölsch, which technically doesn’t exist as a style, but this is as close as we can come to describing it. Essentially it is brewed using a Kölsch recipe with the addition of Munich and black malt. It is light bodied and floral yet with a distinct dark malt flavor. Our goal was to create a dark yet refreshing beer that would pair perfectly with a plate of enchiladas. The label artwork is by Houston artist Carlos Hernandez who is known for his Day of the Dead Rock Star series of paintings and prints.

I’s cola brown with slight red tones and a few quick bubbles. Aromas of toffee and a bit of smokiness. Flavor is some more toffee, roasty bitterness, touch of caramel sweetness and a mild funky sourness in the finish. The body’s fairly light. The bitterness lingers just a hair. It’s a lot like Shiner Bock but a touch lighter.

Surprisingly not bad. I would definitely agree more with the Schwarzbier classification than the black Kolsch label the brewery gives it. However, it does have a lighter palate than the former. Aroma was not strong but of roasted malt. Dark brown color with white foamy head like the Schwarz style. Lighter palate with decent carbonation. Actually, it was smooth and easy to drink with Mexican food, so their goal was achieved. Roasted malt and nut flavors with a full finish. Not much hops bitterness.

On tap. Comes dark brown with a small biege head. Aroma of malt, caramel, and smoke. Taste is sweet malt, caramel, chocolate, coffee, and smoke. Thought more of a Brown Ale. Very drinkable.

Brownish-black with thin tan-off white head. Mild roast, coffee, and mild caramel aroma. Medium bodied, syrupy, malt sweet, mild sour-bitterness, and roast. Mild dryness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle, 12oz. It pours a dark amber body, clear, and topped by a minimal sized light beige head leaving lacings. The aroma is roasted with some caramel and hints of bonfire. Some hoppy hints in the far back. It’s full to medium bodied, with a tad too much carbonation, semi-dry. It’s roasted and lightly burnt in the flavor, some hoppy hints and bitterness in the far back. A bit sweet in the finish. Overall, quite decent, but perhaps a bit sweet. 130828

Location: 12 oz bottle at a restaurant in Houston, 6/4/13

Aroma: The nose is light, with some malty notes, it leans toward the sweet side, with spice notes
Appearance: The pour is an amber color with an average sized, frothy head on it
Flavor: The taste is pretty similar to the nose, kinda sweet, a bit of hop, it works okay at best
Palate: The body is light-medium, and it has an alright, but not exciting mouthfeel to it
Overall Impression: I wasn’t really that impressed by this one. It is kind of like a mediocre Amber. I wouldn’t rush back.
