The first release in our Moveable Yeast series, Weedwacker is the result of our pitching Lawnmower wort (wort is the unfermented beer) with Bavarian Hefeweizen yeast. Weedwacker will be available draft only. This is a study in how different yeasts have different effects on beers. Note: As the base beer for this beer is a Kolsch, this beer will remain in the Kolsch style.

12 oz bottle. Pours cloudy yellow with thick white head. Aroma of citrus, some banana, hay, wheat and has notes of toasted corn. Flavor is the same. Mouthfeel is soft with high carbonation. Overall, solid brew!

Bottle, from the first bottled release. Pours an extremely hazy, almost cloudy, gold-yellow with a white whipped-cream head that leaves copious lace. Nose is banana, papaya, white pepper, and honey. Taste has some weizen elements to it, but is dryer and more citrusy than I expect. It’s good, finishes clean, but there is a lingering heaviness to it that I think detracts from the original Lawnmower beer. Interesting.

Hazy and yellow, with a substantial white head that laces generously. Aroma of grass, yeast, citrus and some spice. The taste is more like a hefe than a kolsch, with a bit of spice and fruit, and a bit more fullness to the flavor. Medium body. Not bad at all, much better than the regular Lawnmower. I’d call it a successful experiment. Quite good as a summer offering.

A very intresting spin of their fancy lawnmower. Their is a nice citrus flavor to it but still has a nice crisp finish.

On tap at Anvil way back when I took notes on it. Hazy hay colored pour with white head. Funky, grass forward nose...touch of barnyard....great nose actually. Flavor isn’t quite what the nose is, and mouthfeel is rather flat. Some floral and citrus notes, but doesn’t live up to what the aroma promises. Nice to taste this side by side with the Lawnmower. Fun experiment to enjoy.

On cask. Pours a hazy yellow color with a medium sized foamy off white head. Notes of bananas, butter, shortbread, catty hops, and lemon. Medium mouthfeel. Lengthy finish.

Tap at Onion Creek-Houston. Pale yellow, hazy, small white head. Nose is very wheaty, banana, lager-ish. Taste is light wheat, very yeasty, some banana. Fluffy and well carbonated. The base lawnmower is evident. Overall decent and a good summer beer. Alcohol is not evident. Hefeweizen-lite.

Tap at the Flying Saucer Houston. Looks like a hazy version of the normal Lawnmower, with a moderate white head. The nose is a little barnyardy and funky; grassy and floral as well. Flavor is drier at the start than Lawnmower, with citrus and flower notes and a little cloves. Finishes a bit more sweet. An interesting and fun experiment from SA - I’m looking forward to the rest of the Movable Yeast series.

Pint glass @ Draught House: served a cloudy and hazy 3 year old straw color, white ring around the glass that did lace to some extent. Cross aroma of wheat, clove, and banana- it was pleasant though. Hit the mouth first with a light-medium body, malt is decent in taste, light in clove in the middle, finish has a lemon zing and is somewhat dry. The wife sipped off this while I had 3 others, at the end of the evening, as the beer became warmer, more of the Lawnmower aspect was very apparent- a grass/ formaldehyde taste developed in the middle. Had to knock off a few points for that, but still a decent experiment.
