The first release in our Moveable Yeast series, Weedwacker is the result of our pitching Lawnmower wort (wort is the unfermented beer) with Bavarian Hefeweizen yeast. Weedwacker will be available draft only. This is a study in how different yeasts have different effects on beers. Note: As the base beer for this beer is a Kolsch, this beer will remain in the Kolsch style.

Bottle, 12oz. It’s a hazy, orange-golden beer with a small, white head. Quite a few microfloaties as well. Lots of bubblegum on the nose, with lemon and some orange, a touch of wheat and cloves. The cloves are more present in the flavor, especially in the finish, with the bubblegum, banana, lemon and wheat present all the way. It’s quite lemony sour on the palate, medium to thin bodied, and with a too hard carbonation, although not effervescent. Long finish. In my opinion, there’s too much bubblegum and acidity in this one, but at least it goes down easily. Until the gas makes it too filling. 130829

The commercial description is wrong as I definetly am drinking this from the bottled version. The hefe yeast does add a good fruit and banana aroma. On taste though it leaves something to be desired a bit on the watery side the base is to simple for this yeast should be maltier but a kolsch is known for crispness. It is trying to be two things at once and not doing to well being a kolsch base and hefeweizen yeast. An interesting experience and drinkable but more novelty than something I would want to go to again and again.

Although this is supposed to be in the Kolsch style, the Hefe yeast has changed the expression significantly. It’s not like any Kolsch I’ve had, but the results are a profound improvement over the base metal as it were. This is an altogether pleasant beer which might benefit from more intensity, but others may find sufficient. It is both crisp an clean with balance but appealing yeast expression leads.

Pours a hazy golden, not much head. Zesty, wheaty aroma has a lemony and slightly sweet overtone. Rich, wheaty aroma has definite lemon and yeasty notes and a hint of banana. Texture is fairly fizzy but on the watery side. Give it a whack.

Hazy golden pour with a 1/2 inch soapy white head. Banana, clove, yeast, grassy. Light body, taste much like aroma with a slight lingering bitterness.

Bottle poured a clear gold with a lasting creamy white head. Aromas of straw bread, light yeast and light spice. Palate was light bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of bread, straw and light spice with a smooth dry finish.

An ok beer. Mild and sweet. Has a bit of grass and banana to it. Not bad for a summer session beer. Also, you can now find it in bottles. Picked one up at the central market in Houston in 2013.

Bottle:   Straw, a little pale, lots of haze (unexpected), moderate to large frothy white head, spotty lacing.   Sweet straw/hay on the nose.   Fairly assertive.   Spritzy wheaty/grassiness up front.   Mild sweetness.   Not as bright as other examples, a bit more wheaty too... not that I mind.   Moderate body and mouthfeel, feels a bit heaftier than others.   Lingering wheaty and grassy notes, mild sweetness, clean.   I guess not reading the description there was some bavarian yeast used, which explains this beer.   Not quite a Kolsch, but on a hot day if you want something with a little bit more body than your average Kolsch, this one is it.   Thanks Bill for the bottle!

On tap at the brewery. Pours a murky gold. Small head and lacing. Big yeasty nose. A little spice up front giving way to banana in the finish. A nice twist on Lawnmower and very refreshing.

On draft at the brewery, Pours hazy yellow with medium head. Aroma is banana esters, and yeast. Taste is the same with a sweet finish, a lighter belgian style wheat, nice beer
