2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 Ernest (5610) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - NOV 4, 2007
Bottle. Head is initially small, fizzy, off-white, fully diminishing. Body is hazy medium amber, bottle conditioned. Aroma is lightly malty (cookie, toasted grain), lightly yeasty (mold, basement), with notes of apples and pear syrup. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter, slightlly unclean. Medium body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Second experience with this one, but just as disappointed with a bottle to myself. Clumsy, without direction or character, syrupy sweet, slightly off aftertaste. Better than the Athene, though, thankfully.
2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 jcr (1946) - Jasper, Indiana, USA - MAR 14, 2008
Bottle. Too sweet and syrupy and too disjointed to be very enjoyable. Short off-white head. Hazy amber body. The nose has a strong yeast smell of mold and damp basement. Behind that are some malty notes of cookie along with sweet pear and peach. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly acidic. Some tartness in the finish. Medium body with a syrupy, sticky texture. Moderate carbonation. Alcohol warming. While the aromas and flavors are all there individually, they don’t blend together the way they do in a good Belgian strong ale. In fact, they don’t have much of a chance because they are overrun by the sugary sweetness.
2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 valpoaj (531) - Valparaiso, Indiana, USA - JUL 28, 2009
750ml bottle...might have had this one sit a bit too long and/or had a bad bottle, so I’ll try to tone down my true thoughts on this one and give it another try in the future. Poured a light brown color with no head to speak of (bottle appeared to be under carbonated). Aroma is spicy and had notes of cinnamon, raisin, and an odd funk that did not agree with the other aromas. Flavor was very oxidized and full of cardboard...caught some notes of spice and raisin, but the cardboard notes were just overwhelming. From what I could pick up on, this acted a lot more like a saison than a belgian strong, but who knows...again, I’ll temper my true thoughts and pick up another bottle in the future.
2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 5/20 pilgrimoutlaw (488) - Wayne, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 1, 2012
Bottles pours dark orange with fizzy tan head. Nail polish remover, soy sauce, caramel. Moderately sweet. Mild bitterness. I couldn’t get through a full glass.
2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 cpetrone84 (959) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 10, 2010
Huge explosion as I take off the cage, gushes everwhere and now finished cleaning.
A-pours a murky dirty dark brown color with way too much lightly tan colored fluffy head.
S-rough, stale grain and light yeast notes. fair bit of sugary malts, caramel and candied sugar.
T-the taste is rough, light notes of belgian style yeast with hints of malt sweetness try to fight through an aweful flavor or stale grain and rust. An underlying caramel malt with notes of dry figs tries to play a role but wow is this offensive. Could it be infected?
M-syrupy medium body with low carbonation and a semi dry finish. smooth and creamy but rough in the back.
D-not sure what’s wrong with this but there is some offensive notes of rusty metal and acetone in this.

2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 fiulijn (12179) - Malmö, DENMARK - APR 23, 2010
Tasting at Papsø Red-amber color; the head, initially large, disappears quickly. The aroma is not very positive: medical alcohol, Band-Aid, glue, nail polish, some Bretts and very light fruits and vinegar. Caramel flavor, dry, with light nail polish presence, alcohol. Unpleasant, I won’t drink one more sip.
2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 mcberko (4053) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - DEC 21, 2012
750mL bottle, sent from Codysjb (thanks a lot, Cody), pours a hazy dark, dirty amber with a giant beige head. Nose is like a cosmetic department of a Sears, with perfume and chemically qualities. Flavour is very strange, with paint thinner, perfume, yeasty tones, and very dry dark fruits. Very carbonated, but fitting for the style. Not sure how this qualifies as a saison - it’s a big chemically mess, though not entirely undrinkable. Not at all recommended.

750ml bottle from South Bay Drugs. Pours a medium brown color with a HUGE off white/ beige head. Nose was quite funky with hints of bacteria and yeast. Palate was full of yeast while being way over carbonated......drain pour.
2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20 jrallen34 (3463) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 8, 2011
bottle... really dark orange, a bit of amber, light tan head is gone right away... strange and off putting aroma, confusing, candy vokda, very alcohol, sharp, saison characteristics come through on the back, musky jolly rancher saison... taste is equally strange, just borderline terrible, a dubbel and saison do not mix... pass
