Directly inspired by traditional saisons of the 19th century, beers meant to quench the thirsts of farm workers at harvest time, the Saison de la Senne is a beer of mixed fermentation. It is both bitter and aromatic thanks to particularly generous hopping, while at the same time developing a vinous and tangy character thanks to a blending with old lambic from the Cantillon brewery. Ripened in oak barrels for 9 months and listed at 4.3% abv.

Thanks ryan! Hazy peach colored pour with a small white head. Doughy funk, lemony funk, and great acidity lead to citrus peel, huge earth, and bretty dryness. Light to medium palate with pillowy effervescence.

Big big thanks to ryan for tracking this down. Cloudy golden pour. Superb bready nose with funky citrus, hay, dough, and great spicy hop and touches of herbal notes. Really really good.

Bottle shared by ryan. Pours clear gold with a medium, fizzy white head, medium retention with light lacing. Aroma is spices, pepper, hay and straw malt, and hoppy with earthy barnyard notes. Flavor is subdued malt with spices and pepper, grassy hops, earth notes and a dry finish. Medium-light body, low warmth, high carbonation.

transparent gold, thin wispy white head, thinnest white ring. Nose is light grain and wheat, faint fresh grass hop, faint biscuit and diacetyl but never offensive, more dryness. Flavor is quite sparkling, dry, grainy and wheaty, light grass bitterness, eggy Brett at mid palate with more gravel, grassy hop through finish with requisite dryness. Bit overly bitter but sparking, quite dry, very nuanced and balanced, flavors rolling all over each other.

750mL thanks to ryan. The pour is a hazy golden with a larger, white head. Enormous webby lace. Nose is enormous amounts of fresh dough, sourdough, crisp crackery malt and biscuit, lemon, perfume oils. Mild cidery notes. Taste is dry, grassy hoppy, slowing putting Saison Dupont to shame with incredible freshness, crisp maltiness, huge quenching character. Long bitter finish. Herbal hop bomb. Yeah- it’s that good.

Lovely dry peppery saison with some citrus funk. Amazing how hoppy this is. Super dry and very hoppy, moderately tart, tons of fresh citrus, lots of floral hops. Awesome.

Bottle shared by ryan: pours a clear pale golden with a stringy-lacing white head. Has a floral light fruity and herbal nose with a touch of tartness. Starts with good fullness and light sweetness with good earthy bitterness and tart complexity before a smooth bittersweet finish. A well balanced and enjoyable brew.

Pale yellow pour with a white head. Really funky woody barnyard aroma with notes of bandaid. Moderate sourness with notes of oak. Slightly funky. Bitter and tannic. Very nice and easy to drink.

Bottle at Moeder Lambic Fontainas during last week’s Belgium trip. Reviewed from notes. From a lambic basket into a De La Senne cervoise. Slight gusher as the bartender opened it up. Pours a slightly-cloudy straw color, though this could have been the result of the gushing. Big white head with great lacing. The nose had bright lemon and slight funk. A bit of lambic-like cheese there as well, though this was quite slight. Moderate acidity and dryness kicks things up to the next level. Slight pucker factor with some lemon rind and bitter eel. Light earthy funk there as well, especially as it warms. A bit of straw. Light body and crisp carbonation with just a touch of acidity. Super long finish and lasting flavor. Fantastic.

Bottle @ Moeder Lambic Fontainas, Brussels.
Pours slightly muddy yellow with a lovely, big, staying, frothy, white head. Great duration. Aroma has sweet malts, brett, light sugar, citrus and green apple. Medium carbonation, fine dry and creamy mouthfeel. Flavour is fairly tart at first, some soapy hints, pepper, dryness, lots of funky brett. Malty sweet with a lingering, hoppy and bretty dryness. Very yummy, perhaps not worth its price, but still yummy.
