SAISON DE PIPAIX 6 %vol. 75cl a traditional Wallonian saison beer, born with the brewery in 1785. Dry, normally hopped, slightly acidic, very spicy (black pepper, ginger, sweet orange peel, curaçao, star anise...)

Gusher. Pours a rich orange golden color with three fingers of fizzy white foam. Nose is interesting, some trace acetone with layers of citrus pith, grapefruit juice, musty hay, rotten tangerines. The palate follows the weirdness of the nose but settles into a citrus forward tangerine juice and musty old hay. Actually there are parts of this beer I really enjoy but there is a small part of it that I despise. At the $8.99 price point I think Ill grab a few more and continue this expedition into Saison de Pipaix.

Tasty saison. Has the usual notes of dry grass and hops, but also has a light taste of pepper. Good.

Draught > Mikkeler Bar. Just as it says. Dry and black pepper spicy. This is good. Lots of orange on the nose. Refreshing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle (750 ml) @ Bier Circus. Hazy bright golden/copper with a medium mostly lasting white head and little lacing. Aroma is of orange peel, ginger, grassy notes, molasses, spices and earthy/mineral notes. Taste is slightly sweet and moderately acidic with orange peel, ginger, earthy presence, caramel/molasses and light grass. Medium body, though it’s a bit thin at times. Low carbonation. Slightly dry finish. Quenching and quite tasty. Very interesting to try and really different from usual actual Saison.

AROMA of bitter chocolate, like mint chocolate. Spices like pepper, fresh and fruity. APPEARANCE is a cloudy orange with nothing special. Foam didn’t last and carbonation was just alright. TASTE is interesting with agrumes (orange), peach and spices. lots of spices. PALATE doesn’t last long. some light acidity. OVERALL a good Saison with interesting spice additions but some aspect where not really well managed. Poured from 33cl bottle from fridge in Teku glass.

1997 750mL. Pours a very rosy orange. Light yellows and almost a pink hue to it. Good amount of sediment. Fleeting white head, lots of lacing. Aroma of cheese, cheese and more cheese. Wow, is this beer brewed with blue cheese??? Amazing. Very funky, lots of serious yeast, blue cheese, bacteria (which creates the cheesy smell), and some very faint ripe fruit notes. Flavor is heavily funky, more cheese, no trace of the hallertauers, dont taste the ginger either. Has a soft, round body, medium and somewhat oxidized. Very good for being this old though. Balance is wonderful. Tends to the sweet side, but not overly so, with a drier yeast flavor coming on in the finish. A bit of residual spice is felt, though it has dulled out quite a bit I would imagine. Wonderful and different. I will be buying the 96 vintage next time I go shopping. 9/5/8/5/18
1995 750mL Glad I got to try this, as I will have had the 95 and 97 with the 96 in my cellar. All of the sour, spoiled fruits and funky, acidic lactobacillus, heavily aged hops and tart citrus in the nose. Flavor is full of cheese, musty barnyard notes, old sour oranges, spoiled grapefruits, more rhubarb and light cider. For a 10 year old beer, this stuff is remarkable. Medium body, good amount of oxiadation, but not overly so/more than expected. Very soft carbonation, but it is still present. Oily mouthfeel. I think, for my tastes, that I preferred this stuff 6 years old instead of 10, but it is still fantastic, IMHO. 8/5/8/4/17. Score is an average of the two years.
1996 bottle drunk 3/29/14. 18 years old!!!
Somewhat of an aged sample here, haha. Was very much expecting to take a sip and pour the rest out....But no, actually, the cork comes off with a big pop and we get a nice clear amber liquid with a large white head that recedes to cover. Ginger, light amber malts, lactic acid, bits of orange peel and nice esters.
Moment of truth....and it tastes....NOT BAD! Haha, wow, definitely can feel its age with plenty of light sherry notes, some wateriness to the body and some strong metallic notes. But the lactic acid, light amber maltiness and spices still make for a reasonably drinkable beer. Writing this review as I’m drinking it and letting it breath, and it’s actually gaining strength and depth. Beer is one hell of a mysterious and amazing beverage! May have to kick the score up just a touch because of how well this stuff has aged. I should probably try a bottle that isn’t 6-18 years old...
