notalush (1996), Rawn-kawn-kohma, New York, USA May 3, 2008 No idea of the age of this bottle, but everything about it is earthy and cellared, from the torn and faded label, to the corroded, moist cork that disintegrated and fell into the bottle when I opened it - hazy, peach-colored beer, with a soapy, lasting head - very musty and earthy aroma, with ginger, orange peel, anise, fairly strong tartness, faint biscuit-like character, some mild white wine-like tannins, and subtle background funkiness (very interesting aroma - I’ve been smelling the beer for five minutes now and haven’t taken a sip yet) - the flavor starts off with some interesting white wine character, moderate acidity, some tart, almost sour citrus character - afterwards, the spices settle on top of softly sweet malts and a biscuity character, and over time gradually impart a spiciness - however, the mild, earthy tartness always remains underneath, as does a very subtle funkiness - lots of wood/cork throughout - probably one of the most interesting flavor and aroma profiles I’ve encountered in a somewhat straightforward saison - I want to buy a case of this stuff and open one per year to watch how this develops.
xibalba89 (86), New York, New York, USA Aug 6, 2008 Pours a golden-brown with a fizzy head. The aroma is a lot of fun... plenty of ginger and fruit, especially orange peel. The flavor didn’t quite deliver, but it certainly didn’t disappoint... very spicy and tart, but with sufficient wetness and mouthfeel to satisfy me. A nice, refreshing summer ale. Angeloregon (1711), Portland, Oregon, USA Jul 29, 2008 750 ML bottle from Belmont Station in PDX--This beer was infected due to a shoddy cork. It poured an orange-amber body with a big rugged white head. Musky, dingy and gnarley in a bad way. Taste and aroma of a dusty, damp, somewhat mildewy rug that’s been sitting in the corner of the basement. That’s followed by a sour, dry finish. Interesting enough because of all the funkiness, but not richly complex. Large, fizzy, off-white head that diminishes fairly quickly. Muddy light orange/amber body. The aroma is dusty with notes of cobwebs and mustiness. Hints of fruit, apple cider, honey and grape. The flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, moderately acidic and lightly bitter. Medium body, thin texture. Fizzy carbonation. The mustiness stays through the finish along with a dry sourness.
Palidor19 (1231), Brandon, Florida, USA Jul 8, 2008 The beer has got some peppery flavor with some strong herb like aroma and texture. Its got some slight tang in the end, its very refreshing.
