Saison Dupont is a classic Belgian farmhouse ale. This is a beautifully balanced, complex beer that has a refreshing fruitiness and long, dry finish. It is bottled unfiltered so it may be cloudy or have a slight sediment but this is normal and perfectly natural.

Extremely dense and abundant head, optimal persistence. Yellow clearly color, veiled and loads. Discreet fizz. Decided scent, tending to a weiss bier. Notes of humid and wine cellar. Decided rich taste, much bitter and strongly. Much alcoholic and flowery rumors. Fermented and with talk of stum.

Champagne golden, livly carbonated, large white head frothy and lasting. Big barnyard type aroma, rubber, and pils-esque. Flavor was light and sweet with some spice mixed in, citrus, and bready. Nice lacing.

Hazy golden colour with a white head. Sweet fruity, light yeasty aroma. Flavor is yeasty with spicy notes and a light fruityness.

2004 750ml Becoming my new favorite style of late. Cloudy golden, huge rocky head that lasts forever. Fantastic aromas of yeast, hay, citrus and with a medium bodied champagne like mouthfeel. Flavor is yeasty, funky, citrusy, spicy really nice. Overall one of the best I’ve had in this style. Great brew!

What a great beer. Aroma is spiced with a hint of skunking, which is probably the one thing that really holds back this beer in my opinion. That is only really noticeable in the aroma. Flavor wise it’s barely there, and I felt it somewhat added to the beer. The flavor is spiced, and slightly fruity with no real bad lingering aftertastes of any sorts. Good beer.

A hazy, light yellow/golden/wheat colored body under a huge, lasting, rocky white head. Bottom yeasts pour in later like silt... tiny, and dark. Heavy yeast aromas are sour fruits and dough with lime and herbal hops. A nice Belgian-sour flavor with fruits leading to a bitter end. Milky smooth in the mouth (assisted as such with soft carbonation) with a dry finish and some upper-palate astringency.

I think my bottle was a tad skunky. I’ll avoid this one in the future unless I can get it on tap. The mouthfeel and appearance are simply wonderful and I can detect some yeasty fruitiness underneath, but the overall scent and flavor are rather poor in this sample, I’m afraid.

UPDATED: DEC 3, 2006 Saison has clearly settled as far and away my favorite style last year, so I thought a re-rate of the "classic" example was necessary. Saison Dupont’s meringue white head never leaves, laces and laces atop the perfect cloudy straight gold. Perfect appearance. Its nose is very complex. The Dupont yeast is home here, leading the show with a master’s hand. Perfect balance between the refreshing tartness and the awesome moderate, yet quenching and lingering bitterness. You can chug it down by a few sips or you can concentrate and seize all kinds of nuances, peppery, piney, fruity (lemon, pineapple, banana, mango) complexities. The mouthfeel is velvet, the big bubbles become a soft pillow as you let the beer breathe for an hour in your glass. Excessively balanced. A big achievement. One of the most nuanced beer in the world and somehow, just 2 years ago, I didn’t dig this one as much as other Saisons.. Dupont owns simply put, this saison is world-class and they have 2 beers that might very well be even better. Just let it breathe and take your time.. and a whole 750 by yourself hopefully.. This one is not too hard to find and worth it.

Original rating summer 2003: The price is a pleasant surprise, a dollar and a half less expensive than Chouffe products of the same size. Hazy yellow coloured ale with a big white head. Inviting spicy aroma with fruits and cereals. I didn’t quite find the legendary complexity of flavors others have been talking about in mouth, in fact the alcohol was pretty noticeable for its strenght and it just tasted tart spicy cereals. I’ll have another try soon. 3.7
2nd try: Better than last time. Tartness is balanced by a massive bitterness that brings us into a looong, yet dry finish. 3.7

En fût chez American Flatbread, VT. Arômes légers et délicats de cidre. Saveurs aigres. Épices, bananes, blé. Légèrement acide. C’est la Saison Dupont Vieille Provision la moins acide que j’aie bu. Bien bonne.

UPDATED: DEC 4, 2009 On tap @ hopleaf. Hazy orange color with a white head. Yeasty, spicy, citrus nose. Yeasty, chalky, leomon citrusy flavor. Very full mouthfeel. Citrusy, slightly sour, yeasy finish. Very nice.
Additional notes : Earthy aroma, with sharp wheat, a touch of brett hiding in the corner, lemon, pears, and spice as well. Great mouthfeel, very full for such a well attenuated beer, helped, of course by the carbonation. The taste is sharp wheat, black pepper, citrus, yeast. It is amazingly flavorful. Great beer. Rating stays the same.

I am drinking a 375ml bottle that was purchased in town. Bought at KS Lukas. This beer has the good fortune of staying out of the direct sun, so it has none of the skunkiness I have gotten from local bottles. I think my prior ratings are accurate, but I think a 4.0 was a little low. I raised it to a 4.4, this is an amazing beer.
